Newbie needs a camping knife.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. Well I ended up ordering a BRKT Bravo-1. I was able to hold one this weekend and I just loved the feel and weight of it.

ya did good :) can't go wrong with a Barkie. in fact, a client sent me one to build a couple sheaths for. i showed it to my wife (who knows very little about cutlery) and even she was like "WHOA, that's a nice knife". they're great.

COALDIGGER - that is beautiful, man, be proud

You will LOVE it. I have two. Its my "go to" all around woods knife.

Thanks all. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive from Duluth Trading.

ANything I need to know about maintaining A2 steel. I know about convex blades and what's involved in sharpening them. But what about the A2 steel itself?

Well congrats. Seems like you can't talk people outta buying that knife! Not ideal Bark River for hiking or camping, but it will work. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Wipe down the A2, put some mineral oil on it, use it, let it develop a patina. That's all you need to do.

Thanks Marcinek,

Yeah I know it's probably not ideal. But hey I have been using a $10 knife forever. So this will be such a huge step up anyway.

Plus its tough to order something I can't touch ahead of time. At least the B1 I was able to hold, etc.

Thanks again for all the advice.

My pleasure!

You are not the first to succomb to the "tacti-sexy" charms of the Bravo-1...wont be the last.

One day I'll figure out why it does that to people who want/need a hiking/camping/bushcraft/food prep knife! :D

Enjoy it!

COLD STEEL ALL THE WAY> People dont like cold steel because of the CEO, Lynn Thompson. He kinda bashes other companies so they decide not to get his high quality cant beat the price and quality knives. but all that aside if you wanted something that can do mostly anything, gerber prodigy or lmf II. basically the same knife, just big brother and little brother. bear grylss uses the smaller of the fam., the prodigy. i personally have the knife. solid!!!!!!!!!!

You really need to check out a Swamp Rat. Check out the Eric Isaacson post on how to order a RatManDu. It is just over 5". They come with your choice of colors. The blade is coated (easy maintenance and resistant to rust) and holds an edge extremely well. It will take a little time to get your knife, but it is well worth it. RatManDu's are $138.95 each, plus shipping from Swamp Rat. There are also plenty to be had on this forum.

You don't need to take my word for it. Type in Swamp Rat Knife Works on this forum or any other search engine and you will see for yourself. If you get one and hate it, I will buy it from you.

The bottom line is that this knife is on a completely different level than the others that you are considering. I have had at least 100 knives in my life and I cannot believe I just found out about Swamp Rat in the last couple of years. They are amazing and affordable.

The Prodigy is an awesome design made from crappy materials that will NOT be practical for regular use. Every time I use the thing I have to spend hours regrinding the edge because there are so many chips. Very ergo though, I wish Gerber had some sort of manufacturing capability...
