Hey,

First post, so greetings--lots of good information around here.

I am trying to find a good gift for my brother to thank him for playing music at my upcoming wedding. Seems to me that a good knife for daily carry would be perfect, but there are too many options out there, and my time is short.

So I'm looking for suggestions for a tough daily carry folder in the $80 or less street price range--something cool enough for a 24yo BMW motorcycle mechanic. I imagine he'd use it for about anything if he had it on him, so it's got to be pretty tough.

Found an assisted folder from Buck that was cool, but don't have the highest opinion of Buck. SOG Pentagon folder is also pretty sweet looking and functional. Have seen suggestions for Benchmade and Spyderco, but not sure which would be worth the $$.

Thanks in advance!
Daniel

You could look into getting a couple of knives for the price range. Something along the lines of a CRKT RYan Model 7 for daily carry (this seems to be one of my most popular folders among the tough guys that I know who are not knifers. And then you could give him a small slipjoint or assisted opener like the Kershaw Scallion and get it engraved as a thank you- that way he would have the cool worker knife for the boys and a dressier knife for when he is out on a date ect. and both would remind him of your gratitude. Just my thoughts but good luck- I'm sure that you will recieve a lot of options here.

Welcome to the forums!!!!! Enjoy.

The Ka Bar Dozier D2, Folding Hunter and the Ka Bar Dozier Thorn Folder are good, tough edc knives. Both have D2 steel and aluminum handles. Your choice $63.58 @ knifeworks.com.

A good balance between weight, cost, and strength is the new Spyderco Delica 4. For more heavy duty there is the Manix (and Mini-Manix) or the Paramilitary, but those are a bit more than the $80 you posted.

I don't know if you've done a search or know much about knives, but you should check out both Spyderco and Benchmade. They are the top 2 production knife companies, you can't lose with either one. Just pick what you think he'd like.

Welcome to the party! I'm glade we have some new opinions in the forum.

If I may respectfully make a suggestion, take a look at the Benchmade #550 "Griptillian". I think you can find it in your price range and it is a classic beat-it-up everyday folder with lots of fans. It has a great handle, good steel that holds an edge, and one handed opening. The axis lock is very smooth and you can change out the clip position. It is easy to pull apart to clean so a mechanic might have fun with it.

Welcome and listen to these guys...they know thier knives and steered me in the right direction.

Thanks a lot--plenty of good suggestions. Research seems to indicate a lot of respect for the Benchmade Griptillian/Mini Griptillian. They look solid for sure, and I've had good experience with Benchmade in the past.

Don't know much about the Ka-Bar Dozier models, but they seem interesting...

I'm going to keep looking around--keep the suggestions coming! And can someone email a suggestion about the best place to get a good deal?

Daniel

Looks like the Mini Griptillian w/D2 steel is an excellent buy--leaning heavily this way. Any suggestions before I pull the trigger?

My only other thought is that the Bark River knives look excellent, and a Mini-Canadian might be a nice EDC, eventhough it's not a folder...

Thanks! Daniel
