Hey fellas I've never attempted to make a knife myself but I have always had an infatuation with knives and I think It would be a great hobby I could do for years to come. My first question is a stupid one but knife blanks do need to be tempered and quenched before they will hold a an edge correct? Any and all Info/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

pre-ground blanks are hardened and ready to slap a set of scales on, also most of them are very sharp, use many layers of tape while puting the handle on

How about blade steel? Does need to be treated right? Noob question but I might as well ask the experts

Blade steel needs to be heat treated, purchased from the right supplier it will be fully annealed, which means it's in its softest state and easy to work

I'm definitely not a pro, I've just been around long enough to pick up a few things ;0)

Unless otherwise stated by the seller, assume any high-carbon steel product is not hardened.

Ah hell I thought I was being helpful.

the blanks you buy at a place like Knifekits, Jantz and the others are ready to put handles on.

See Nick Wheelers handle tutorial at the beginning of this

For me your sticky post took years off of my learning curve and it, along with this site and it's people, are responsible for me improving fast enough to stick with it. I daresay is the same thing for many here.

The one's it might run off.... Well there might be be benefit to that as well.

Maybe we should have a Count appreciating thread as well.

Thanks!

Your list is awesome Count, however there is only one thing I can think of that is more intimidating..... my ex-mother-in-law after 10 shots of Jack Daniels LOL

Wait now.. Who had those ten shots? You or her? Either one could mean trouble...

:barf::eek::D
