Educating myself on the possible purchase of an XM-18. I like the flipper design but IF there is a chance it would open in my pocket I'll go with the non flipper option. Knife would be carried in right front pocket along with keys etc. If the non flipper is the way to go would you stick with Hinderer or recommend another manufacturer? Anyone had their XM accidentally open? Thanks in advance.

Stick with Hinderer, the flipper will not open in your pocket (the flipper itself has nothing to do with that, it's a detent question - and XM's have plenty of detent). Go with the flipper and enjoy your XM!

If you carry tip down.....Keep the blade pressed against the back seam of the pocket and it can't open with the blade blocked in.

Been carrying my xm-18 for 1year straight every day, it has never opened in my pocket. Besides, they don't make flippers anymore!

Where did you get that information? Pretty much all you will see coming out from the Ranch is flippers.

I think you mean they don't make "non flippers" anymore. That said, while they haven't made them in any of the recent batches, I've never heard that they have disco'd making them altogether. <shrug>

I own only flippers and carry them exclusively tip-up, never had one open on me in the pocket.

It won't open in your pocket. I've rotated 4 XM flippers in an edc role for over 2 years now and have never had one open in my pocket.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured it wouldn't be an issue or the flipper series would not enjoy the popularity it does. Needed it hear it from the Hinderer owners, and Rob, to put me at ease. Thanks again.

I carry tip up right pocket and the blade spine is up against the back of my pocket. Has never opened and can't in that configuration. Would work in mirror fashion left pocket (tip down).

The only time mine has ever opened in my pocket is when I get this sudden urge to play with my xm in an overly populate public area....... I don't even realize I'm doing it....... Never happens with my CRK umnumzaan hmmmmm

Never had an issue of it opening in my pocket. Just as the others have stated. Keep the spine against the seam and no worries

I had a 3" non flipper open a few time while taking it out of my pocket which catches me off guard (tip up carry). I tightened the pivot which solved the problem, but the knife doesn't have the best action now. If I had a flipper it would actually prevent this from happening by pushing the blade in while taking the knife out. All in all the flipper might be safer for pocket carry. BTW the blade opening when taking it out of my pocket was not due to an error by me :D, I would say it was due to the weeker detent of the 3", and the jimping catching on my slightly frayed pocket (frayed due to knife carry) and a flipper would have prevent something dangerous like this happening IMHO.

Another happy Xm18 flipper owner here with no issues to date!

I don't carry it IWB though, afraid it may be more likely to open without a pocket seam to press the spine against.

I have a few and they never have but this one did. Detent was weak overall anyways. But in the XM's defense. It was when I was running across the street..
