Hello, I would like to thicken the grip on a fixed blade. I think the best route for me is to use spacers between the blade and the current micarta slabs. First what is the common material knife builders use when you see red or other color liners? Is it also mircarta or plastic? Second, would you epoxy the liners to both the blade and the slabs? Third, where can you purchase these materials? Thanks.

Look at the last sticky in this forum for suppliers. I like to use G10, which comes in many different thicknesses and colors. Micarta would work fine too. You should use a good epoxy on very clean surfaces that have been scuffed up some. Coat both sides and hold them to dry using spring clips or something else that squeezes. Then shape as desired.

Thanks.

The typical material is sold as "fiber spacer material," but any stable material would do. Cut some plastic from a cat liter box or something like that. Some guys have used plastic from xbox game cases, though that's really for effect, not thickness. As long as it's flat and tight, you shouldn't need to epoxy it, but that's just more space for moisture penetration. Maybe glue the liners to the slabs and shape them from there?
