So I just started making my first knives and I chose a mini cleaver design out of 1089 high carbon steel. I have it all profiled out and went with a full flat grind. My question is how thin should I get the cutting edge before sending it out to heat treat? My thoughts were that I didn't want to get it to close to where I would start sharpening it and have it warp or something while being heat treated. Thanks in advance, John.

Take a look at the "all the good stuff" portion of the stickies at the top of the main page, there is a ton of info in there including this answer. Im assuming you mean 1084? I would not go thinner than .025" . Do you have a grinder or are you using files? What thickness is you stock? What kind of knife are you making?

Sorry it took so long to reply but I meant 1095 steel my mistake and it is 5/32 thick. I did go through the stickies and read a bunch of things and did a search and found the answer to my question so my bad I didn't look hard enough before I asked but thank you for your reply -John
