i have been reading about knives, looking at knives....buying knives for the past couple of years and am still at a loss to explain why CRKT products seem as good as any $500.00 knife on the market. any comments ?

Well, I agree that they are a good value, as good as a $500 knife? Maybe not in my opinion.

How do they do it? I'll say good designs, inexpensive production and good quality control.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Rick.

The CRKT knives are of very high value, indeed. If you compare them to a $150 knife you will see they lack light weight and blade performance because they are made from relatively inexpensive materials. Not that materials cost would explain the difference, it wouldn't. But economies of scale and overseas labor costs would. If you compare them to a $500 knife then you are comparing them to a handmade custom knife and the comparison isn't sensible to make.

Dave is right on how they do it. They pioneered the concept of commissioning a design from a talented Western custom knifemaker and then producing the design in Taiwan in large quantities. Other manufacturers are beginning to take the lead and do the same thing. It's been very successful for Columbia River. Take care.

Roger that...appreciate the response. My "collection" includes CRKT, Benchmade, Cold Steel, Leatherman, etc. I also buy guns, but I like the knives better, don't know why, it' a mystery... btw am going out today to get a new BM a stryker, or a 710 or a 720 or maybe an auto...do not know model numbers and they are not listed in BM's 2000 catalog.

Wait a bit and get the BM940, cool knife!

I have the 720 and it's very good also, but that 940 with a plain edge would do it for me!

and Welcome to the forums guy!
