Newbie question

Quite simple. Hold up a sheet of newspaper, place the edge of your kife on the edge of the paper and push.

One of two things will happen.

Your knife will slice through the paper = Sharp
The paper will simply tear or rip = You have more work to do.

The difference being that slicing through a piece of newspaper doesn't tell you all that terribly much. The blade may have little tiny serrations (that you can't even really see) and those will shred the paper more than slice it.

Pushing the blade straight through the newspaper means that it is quite sharp, and a bit more refined of an edge to boot.

(that's not to say that there is ever a time when there are not tiny serrations on the blade, that's just a discussion way down the line for a newb.:) )
