Two quick questions from a newbie:

1) Anyone know a good source for a forge thermometer ?

2) When does a "newbie" graduate to "knife-maker" ?

1. It's called a pyrometer, www.k2-products.com has a complete kit for $69.00. The model # is DP-902F. It has everything you need to monitor forge temps, probe, thermocouple, digital readout, stand, battery, the works.

2.In my opinion a newbie becomes a knifemaker upon completion of his/her first knife.
As far as graduation, I don't think you ever graduate.
You should strive to learn something new on every knife, I usually learn several things.

You can get a K type thermocouple from Auberins.com , they also have the lead wire and PID controllers. PID will read the temps for about the same price or less than a pyrometer and the PID will also control solenoids for automatic control of your forge if you decide to go that route in the future. PID's can also be found on ebay.

They answered the first question for you pretty good.

The second is a bit trickier. Perhaps it's one of those epiphanies.... when you refer to yourself as a knifemaker, or it's an attitude like in sports. You can play lineback or you can BE a linebacker, there's a world of difference. Mike Singletary didn't play linebacker, he WAS a linebacker.

gents...very good words from all of you ...many thanks !! I will check the sources you gave me on temp control. As for my newbie question....... I appreciate your shared wisdom.
