My small, humble Schrade pocketknife collection consists of the following:

24OT
34OT
77OT
194OT

I really like the Schrade knives because they are relatively easy to find and most models are not expensive. I'm finding what I like on ebay for starters. I don't plan to sell...just to accumulate and enjoy what I like.

A couple of questions for you guys on this forum:

From a collectible standpoint, should I be looking for things that come with original boxes? I have none of those.

Are there some sources for fair market value for these Schrades? I don't want to overpay...there seems to be plenty available...and I can afford to be patient. $8-$15 models are fine...I'll build up a base with those for starters.

What should I be avoiding on ebay? It seems the newer models are not USA made, and I've avoided those. I really prefer vintage. I haven't been to a knife show yet (in a month or so there's one coming to my area)...is that a better source?

Finally, I'd like a source with pictures of all the models. Any direction there?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.. Check the sticky at the top of the page. lrv has assembled everything you always wanted to ask about, and it's all in one place, including all those pictures of the various maodels and patterns you asked about.

Sticky at top noted and perused. Excellent information...thank you...that is amazing!

Welcome! I collect OldTimer knives too.

Other than the most common models that may still be available at K-Mart or elsewhere, I find eBay to be the best source for discontinued knives. The trick, as you mentioned, is not paying too much. IMO, the more common models are reasonably priced, the 34OT, 12OT, 18OT, etc. The more rare models that have been discontinued for years are sky-high and may stay that way, the 106OT for instance.

Bargain-shopping, keep an eye out for OldTimers that were marketed or sold by other companies. The Primble OldTimers for instance don't sell high, even in mint condition. Craftsman also sold rebranded OldTimers. Also watch for variations of the common models, like the models marked Schrade-Walden, Schrade+, or simply Schrade USA.

From a collectible standpoint, should I be looking for things that come with original boxes? I have none of those.
For the purpose of collecting or reselling, knives with the original boxes and paperwork will sell considerably higher than mint condition knives alone. But if there's a pattern I'm missing, I'll buy just the knife if I get the chance. As a result, about half of mine have boxes and half don't. I prefer the NIB knives if I can get them, but it's not always an option, especially if on a budget.

Since you like OldTimers, here are some pics of mine that I have posted before:

Here are three variations of the nail nick pattern on the 8OT:

Here is a complete set of the Ulster OldTimers (Ulster made the OldTimer knives before Schrade):

Also, if looking for info on a certain model #, do a search of the forum. There are some in-depth detailed articles about OldTimer and Schrade knives, an incredible reference source. There was one recently about the 34OT.

I read Irv's article on Prince Albert in the Can. Just picked up a old can on ebay with the Old Timer's ad...now I'm gonna try to find the 3 knives.

I see in his article the three knives are:

10OT
50OT
58OT

How tough are these to come by? And should I be searching under Ulster as well for listings on ebay?

Waliguy,

I wanted to ask you about the "24OT" on your list. It's absent from my running list of OldTimer model numbers. Either it's a typo or I need to add it to the list. :) Is it one of the X-Timer models by chance?

-Bob

Bob -- it is a Schrade 24OT X-Timer black & gold- 2 blade. It's the only X-Timer I have.

That explains it; I haven't included any of the X-Times on my list.

Thanks,
-Bob

XT4 was a bead blasted blade finish with a black delrin handle.

Codger -- thank you. I have looked all over this site for MSRPs on the Schrades. Is it listed somewhere? I'm interested in just the OTs.

Thanks ISC_RIP for that info. Several of us have searched in vain for one. All we had was the '04 catalog listing picture to go by. Were any produced beyond the proto stage?

redjohn48, search eBay for Schrade 153UH. Then check the ended listings box. Selling prices fluctuate so wildly, I can't keep up! Beware any that have red spacers. Those are chinee knives. They don't count, IMHO.

waliguy, my main source is Clemente's book on OT and UH knives. A great resource and easy to use quick reference guide. majormarket@charter.net
Otherwise, I have a binder filled with old price lists and fliers. Soon, we hope to have some shortlines on Larry's site which were annual dealer and retail price lists.

Codger

There were probably 4-6 completed XT4 prototypes only. The knife never made it into production. There should have been other ground blades in the factory.

Thanks Codger...I sent Clemente an email to request his book. Good reading for a newbie like me ;)

It will come as loose punched pages, 5 1/2x8 1/2. Any office supply has binders this size with clear insertable covers and spine, and inside pockets front and rear. Buy some loose leaf paper to fit too. Then you can add notes without marking up the text. You can tab the pages if you want to be fancy, but with enough use, you can flip right to the page you want without much effort.
