Newbie Spyderco Question

My Native cuts well, and holds a nice edge(have to find out how to get the wire off the edge though, used for 3 months and it's still there)... but has enough movement in the pivot that from locked, I can grab the tip and see the lockbar move above the scales.

What do u mean when you say get the wire out? What is the 'wire' on the edge?

VW: you might find it odd that some steel feels like they have a burr/wire edge but they don't. I have the same slight problem when I had the Native and the Greco MST IV with the 8670 steel.

Calyth> My millie in 440V with CE doesn't have a wire. I can see the sucker on my native. It cuts, but doesn't want to shave(yes, you can shave with SE).

jjcoolay> also known as a burr, the wire is a small amount of metal that can bend under hard use thereby "dulling" the edge. Steeling wil re-align the edge/wire. If you strop you can remove the wire(or sharpen enough so it knocks off), but I can't get into the serrations.

Or cardboard backings on a notebook from what I've heard before.
I mentioned that it might felt like a wire edge but not because I have it both happen to me on the Native (RIP) and my Greco, they both shave, and they both felt as if there's a wire edge.

Wow!! This is great info. I tried out the Delica & Native today at a local shop. Both felt great & both were extremely sharp. I did notice that the Native had the bevel of the blade on one side rather than on both like the Delica. Does this make a difference?

I haven't noticed a difference in proformance with the single bevel. The dual hollow grind thins the edge down, and the left-side grind makes a great leftie knife for me. I just slice with tip in, edge out, and the flat bevel rides on the material.

I had 1.5yrs working on my Tufram ATS-55 Cricket with this same thing, and learned how to work with it. The only real difference is in sharpening. you have to sharpen the back side(right) to knock off the wire that forms.

Going to wait till I find out from Dr Mike about my Native, but I'll probably see if they can toss a v-grind on mine.
