I just recently got my first "quality" knife and still dont know the proper sharpening/maintnence steps. Could someone give me a quick "lesson" lol Thanks!
For maintenance, just make sure to keep your knife oiled, and lubed with a good quality product. I use Mineral oil as it is cheap, and gets the job done. For folding knives, make sure the locking mechanism is kept clean. I just run my folders under the facet, and let dry. if any gunk gets caught in the pivot,etc... it gets picked free with a toothpick/probe. Try not to store knives in their leather sheathes.
For sharpening, use a good quality system. The most important thing I believe is to use the correct angle, 22 degree's should be fine for most knives. Also, get a piece of heavy leather, or a good strop. I tend to try, and use the strop before a sharpening is required. For more, see the sharpening FAQ.
Also run a search on the cleaning subject, much has been written on it.
