newbie to spydies - sage and manix question

Hey guys. I've been lurking the Spyderco forum for a while because I saw just how efficient these knives are.
Anyway I started looking into this company's knives a lot closer and at one point I'm gonna get the Para 2. But I'll also need sth that looks less aggressive for a few reasons. That's pretty much how i got to the Sage series and the Manix 2.

My questions here are:
-are there any accounts of the liner failing on the Sage?

-I've recently seen a lock failure on the Manix 2 so I'm wondering if this is an isolated incident (it was a spine whack test, but I'd still like to know if this has happened before)

-I saw sth about a Sage 3. Around what time could that be released and around what price could it be (a rough estimate is really fine)?

Thx in advance

-Never heard of a sage lock ever failing

-It failed because it was being grossly abused; don't worry about either failing during normal use

-We don't know when the sage 3 is coming out, but IIRC, Sal said this year. It would probably be less expensive than the current sages(the scales are g-1); I'd guess a street value of 70-80

You're not going to have Any Problems with the Sage I liner lock ..none at all

zero...the Manix 2 has one of the strongest locks is the knife industry unless

you try to break the lock....which you wouldn't have any reason to do.

The test you may have read about was set up to beat the crap out of

both knives. I hope you would not be doing that!

Never heard of a lock failing on the Sage. Then again I haven't seen any of them used hard.

I'm waiting to hear back from Spyderco on that. I believe it to be an isolated incident and haven't heard of the lock failing on any other knives. See the other YT video's of people spine whacking the crap out of them.

Est IIRC was before then end of 2010. No idea what the price would be, guess between $120-$160.

Haven't heard of the liner lock on a sage 2 failing before.

i still don't know how anyone can see a knife abuse video like that and believe there is a problem with the knife. If you try hard enough to break something you are going to break it. The spine whack, especially repeated spine whacks, are abuse and in no way simulate anything you would do to a knife. The Caged Ball Lock is one of the toughest locks out there and I trust it completely.

The sage 3 doesn't have a release date yet but you can't go wrong with the sage 2.

THX guys. I know that spine whacking is an abuse and I'd never do it, but I had bad experiences with other companies and other kind of gear so I'd rather check with ppl that use the knife and know how it preforms

It may also not have been due to the abuse, but due to a defect. If you check spyderco forums, you can see another Manix 2 get whacked and whacked and the lock not release. I gave mine some quite stout whacks, and the ball did not disengage.

Bigger issue for you may be that I don't think the Manix 2 is less menacing than the Para or Para 2, just the opposite in fact. Have you considered a SS delica or perhaps a SS dragonfly?

If you're worried about the liner lock failing on a Sage 1 you can get the Sage 2 which has a stronger frame lock that is just rock solid

either sage will be a great EDC. i think the para is a tad menacing, depends on where you live i suppose. but i think a sage 2 would be a great, non threatening EDC which will really perform.

The Sages are awesome, awesome knives. I would recommend them over the Manix 2 just because the Manix 2 does not have a good blade configuration for EDC, although it is a great knife. I believe there to have been something wrong with the knife in the M2 video, I don't think that was abuse of the knife, and I know of guys that have done much worse to their Manixs with no problem.

Thank you again guys. I'll look into other models as well. Really need to find something sheelpe friendly, and for some reason I didn't think that the Manix 2 would scare the holy **** out of anyone

Those spinewhack tests are the stupidest thing ever. Any locking knife will fail if you abuse it. The sage is plenty tough enough for any job requiring a knife. If you want a crowbar, go buy one of those instead.

If you want sheeple friendly, get a Case Swayback Jack or other traditional non locking folder. No spyderco's are sheeple friendly. They look like weapons.

I'd agree. The Sage I's locking liner is thicker than the frames of some framelocks. Could it be made to fail by acts of intentional abuse - possibly. But unless your motto is "hold my beer and watch this", chances of it failing are as close to zero as you could want.

I'd have to take exception to that. Anyone who'd claim the Kiwi, C27 Jess Horn, or Micro Dyad look like weapons would also classify said Case, SAKs, and damn near anything else with a blade as one. I'd say the Sage I is relatively benign looking compared to the ParaMilitary or Manix 2.

I consider the Sage I CF to be a gentleman's knife and would consider the Caly 3 CF as it's brother. Both have terrific ergonomics.

I too have the Blue, Green and Pink Manixes. I really love those knives and they get a turn in my pocket too.

I'm also excited about the new Para 2 as I prefer tipup carry as the both the original Para and Mili are tip down carry.

FWIW, here's a shot of them together....

OK they really aren't that comparable, and i see how the Manix can come off as intimidating

If you like the looks of the Sage also consider the Caly 3:

I prefer it to the Sage by a fraction due to the back lock.

I dont consider any of these a gentleman's knife. Not by a long shot.

Sage's are fantastic knives, some of my favorites from any company. But they are not sheeple friendly.

If you are new to spyderco, pick up a tenacious or a persistence before you buy a sage or manix. They can be had for around 30 bucks, and are just awesome knives.
