Newbie to the idea of a small fixed blade for pocket carry - your thoughts please!

I thought maybe it was modified. I'm on the fence about the powder coating. Not sure if i really like it or not. I'm leaning towards not. I like the size of it though and the price is right. Very tempting and if there was an option without the powder coating, I would have already jumped on one.

Although not as pretty as the BRK's, the Candiru might be my favorite small fixed blade. It is just a very versatile and capable blade for it's size. I highly recommend getting one in hand and you'll understand. If going with a BRK, I would definitely suggest a PSK over a Bravo Micro. If you could get them all in hand, you would understand why.

If you plan on stripping the coating on the Candi, you'll want to etch the logo before you strip it, otherwise, you will lose the logo (that is, if you care about the logo).

Bob, the powder coating on the ESEE knives comes off very easily with some paint stripper. I did it to an Izula II

Well you guys just talked me into it.:D And no, I don't care about the etch at all. Thank you Al and Jake.

Thank you for this^, and the comparison pics! Still hoping the City Knife is the one, but even if it is, I may have caught a touch of Bark River fever and may need more than one BRK&T knife ;)

LOL! It's a slippery slope. BRK makes great knives with top notch f/f and a variety of great blade steels. Couple that with the many different varieties of gorgeous burl woods and other handle options, mosaic pins, and liners, and the possibilities vary widely. Good luck in your search!

Mine is a Dawson 34 from Barry's days in Durango. The sheath is a belt sheath of bison leather but the loop is so large that when I put the whole affair in my front or back pocket it stands upright and catches on the top seam of the pocket and stays put while the knife slides free easily. It never threatens to slide out or come loose on its own. I can even ride with it, though I'm more inclined to move it to my belt then, for easier access. I've been carrying it a little since this thread appeared. Oh, I've since removed the caveman-like thread handle wrap. With it in the pocket I wanted less bulk.

(Recycled pics, sorry . . . Don't have the knife in front of me this morning.)

Aha which did you end up with Coyote711? I saw in another thread you had anticipation for the BRK city knife ;)
My BHK North River just arrived today and it is a perfect mate for pocket carry. Just need to find a leather sheath for it now. Will post more up on it soon~

Barkies are certainly addictive! Given the fact that the pro scalpel was what first drew you in, have you considered the pro scalpel II? About a quarter inch more handle....I have both it and the city knife and I love them both. They actually both have a handle length of 3.5", and while the city knife's handle is certainly chunkier and more "hand-filling", I also like the ergonomics of the ps2, with its curve and finger choil.

I thought I would post a follow up on this regarding my purchase of a KSF Pocono Pocket Sheath.
The Pocono is a slightly smaller, more streamlined version of their Adirondack Pocket Sheath. So That's what I decided to go with given the size of my BRKT Little Creek. The Little Creek fits the sheath very nicely and it all rides in the pocket quite well. My one big issue with this sheath is the secondary sleeve. It's all but useless. I cannot fit much of anything in there at all. even a ballpoint pen will not slide all the way in never mind my pen light or a small pocket knife. Even a small peanut folder doesn't fit. Because of that, I'm a little disappointed. I had hopes of carrying something else useful in the secondary sleeve. I'm not completely disappointed as it does ride nice in the pocket, but I sort of wish I went with the Adirondack instead.
Part of the problem is a welt of leather running down the side to reinforce the stitching I presume. You can see it in the pics below. Or, they should have formed the leather a bit to allow something to fit in there. As yo can see, that is as far as a ballpoint pen will fit. It will not go in any further.

Bob, you could try wet forming the sheath. Run it under some warm water until it's nice and pliable. Then put your knife in and your light or a smal knife in the other side and it will stretch out. You can also press around the knife/knives or the light/pen and it will form to the outline. Don't press with finger nails though or it will leave a mark that's almost impossible to smooth out. Once you get the compartments to the shape you want just slowly take the knives or light out and let it dry naturally...don't force dry it in any way. That can lead to cracks. Once completely dry, treat it with a leather proofer like sno-seal or the such and it will stay nice and shaped.

Hey Bob, I've got the Pocono sheath that I bought a few years ago. I'm able to carry a peanut or a Case SBJ or Northwoods Norfolk in that second pocket. I can also manage to get a full size ball point pen in there. I know mine was much tighter when I first received it. It pretty much stretched out to form around the ithems I carry in it. Maybe yours is sized a little different, although your pics make me think they are awfully close to the same.

That's pretty much my plan right now Jake. I think it would be fine after wet forming (hopefully anyways) and if so, I will be happy with this option. I was just reading about wet forming. I don't have a lot of leather experience, but will give it a try.
Thank you very much for the suggestions.

I haven't ended up with anything of my own yet except the Pro Scalpel, which I figure I'll be returning in exchange for a somewhat larger Bark River.

Anyway, the anticipation comment was in response to the City Knife that Tom - Whetstone39 - is lending me for a tryout. It's scheduled to be delivered today :D. I'll post an update later today with my initial impressions. ;)

I'm happy to hear you like the North River - it's a nice looking knife!

I did consider the Pro Scalpel II at the time I ordered the Pro Scalpel, but since it was literally the first time I had ever even thought about pocket carry of a fixed blade, I decided to just buy the less expensive knife for a tryout. It was actually the City Knife that first drew me in. ;) Thanks for your comments!

Bob, I've used that sheath frequently. Wet or grease forming works well... I crammed a small Maratac AAA light in one for a couple days, and a #92 Spearpoint in a second...they sorted themselves out just fine. Crossing my fingers for ya!

I wet the sheath a while ago and I have it setting with my pen light and the Bark River in it as we speak.

The City Knife that Tom sent me to try out has arrived! My first impression and words to myself: Oh my, this is a nice knife! This is a nice knife!!!

Tom, I thank you heartily, my friend!

I immediately took my wallet and Vic Electrician out of my RFP, slipped the Electrician into the side pouch of the sheath, and put it back in my RFP. No problem at all - I hardly notice the difference. This of course necessitated moving the wallet to the LFP (I don't do back pockets for wallets), and that feels a little clunky, what with the other stuff I normally carry there. So some experimentation will be needed, or maybe just a little time to get used to it.

The knife feels great in hand. It has some heft to it and it just feels "right". I know that's subjective, but it's one of those things you know when you see or feel it. Solid three finger grip - much better than the Pro Scalpel. I love the blade length - not too short, not too long.

Anyway, I just got a new knife to try out - what am I doing sitting here??? :D I'll update more later.

Thanks again Tom!
