I wish I had never ventured onto this forum-this knife business could be more addictive than old S&W revolvers!

Anyway, I have a couple of questions about and old knife or two. A few years ago, one of my daughters gave me a Shrade Old Timer 34OT. This was evidently purchased after Schrade went out of business as the hardware store told her there would be no more and stock was limited to what was on hand. Anyway, this knife has a large blade made from carbon steel and the other two blades are stainless. I'm guessing it was put together with the parts that were on hand. It has been my EDC since I got it and it is well used. Is it a rare item considering its construction?

My other question pertains to an old Buck 301 Stockman. It was given to my grandfather a short time before he died. It is at least 20-25 yrs. old. He had sharpened the blades once but it is in great shape and is still in the box with the papers. Would it hurt anything if I were to sharpen it and carry it once and awhile?

About the addiction part of this-thanks to my new interest in sharp pointy things I do believe Santa is bringing me a BM Griptilian along with a SAK alox soldier and a SAK Classic in translucent green. I'm going to have to rotate knives or get pants with deeper pockets!

Welcome!

Most likely it is. We have a Schrade sub-forum here, you should roam around there for a bit.

Maybe ask in the Buck sub-forum here too. Being sharpened, I'm not sure of the collector value, but for a knife that old, with box & papers, you've got a nice keeper there.

The 301's are great knives.

Not terribly rare. From what I've read here on the forum, more than a few like that went out the doors in the waning days of Schrade.

I don't reckon your grandfather would have wanted it to be a "safe queen." I say go ahead and carry it proudly. That's a workhorse knife.

As someone who use to have a lot of safe queens, I find I get a lot more enjoyment out of the knives, if I actually carry and use them...

YMMV

I appreciate the advice and I do believe y'all are right.

The 34OT is staying in my pocket and the 301 will a soft Arkansas tonight.

In about a week though, I'll had to figure out a rotation with the new ones...

Buck,
The overall answer is "CARRY IT". But don't use it to pry on anything and break the blade. Pry bars are made for that.

If your curious as to what era/model it is, tell me what is stamped on the tangs and is there more than one rivet showing on scales.

All I use my knives for is cutting, so it ought to last.

The Buck has three rivets showing in the scales. The large blade has at the base on one side:
BUCK
made in
U.S.A.

The other side has:
301

There are no other markings. The scales have on one side the image of a knife being hammered into a bolt.

Many Thanks

Ok,

You have the second version made by Camillus , Buck 301. Three Schrade versions and one Camillus previous. Yours is 1971 issue. Rivets are smaller than spring pin head. Your spey blade will be rounded. The white stuff is from the Delrin breakdown while in a tight enclosed space. If your is like that take some toothpaste and lightly wash it and then rub in mineral oil...

EDIT:Ooops, I see 300bucks has already gave you the answer, so carry and enjoy!!!

That age would put it as either a late Camillus contract or an early inhouse Buck made one. (if you can give a good description of the tangstamp or a picture, I can tell you for sure.)

I love 301's, and in my opinion, since it has already been carried and sharpened some, that if you want to go ahead and enjoy using it, as the value on these just isn't that high anyway.

I appreciate the info! The Buck has now been introduced to a rock and is in my pocket as I type.

6thtexas, it appears you are hooked. Congratulations on some great knives to start a (probably) large collection. Believe me, it gets in your blood and the only cure is to buy another one. Welcome and enjoy the company. I sure do.

I ain't got sense enough to work the digital camera, much less get the photos on the internet.

I'll see if the wife could help me with it.

Here's a picture on a Schrade version. I believe the 2nd. The oldest one had grooved bolsters.

Schrade version is identified by a thinner serpentine frame.

Hawk,

No. 1 grooved bolsters, No. 2 as above but with no BUCK (nothing) on reverse and then No. 3 as above. No. 2 is hard to find......

I always tell folks to rub the bolster on their pants to heat it up and then breath moist breath on it. The Schrades had hidden pins and no blade pivot pins will show, in the Camillus made version you should be able to see the outline of the pins. We would be collecting a lot of Schrade made Bucks , BUT Buck switched to Camillus and it's visible bolster pins to make their 'forever warranty' much easier to keep. With the Schrades and their hidden pin you had to take the knife completely apart to just replace a broken blade.
