Newbie wants EDC recommendation

I've been lurking on this forum for a while, and finally bought a SAR-4 a couple of weeks ago. After using / collecting knives for 30+ years, I feel I can no longer carry a standard folder as my edc. All knives seem inadequate now including my present edc, a CRK Umnumzan. My previous carry knife was an Al Mar SERE which I thought was a huge bulky blade...it feels like a toy to me now.

I need a recommendation as to what knife I can purchase and carry somewhat stealthily. My requirements are: knife blade 3-3 1/2", a handle that's not too long, and a serious blade thickness of at least .187, but prefferably closer to .2 to .22. It should have a nice balance as well, and it must be INFI!

So far, it looks like a Game Warden or a Heavy Duty might be my only choices. I like the Cultie, but I believe it's too thin at 1/8".

What does the Hog Mind have to say?

Heavy Duty or a MAD (Milli Active Duty) almost the same knife +/- 0.005 in thickness, IWB.

There's usually a bunch available on the Exchange at descent prices.

Yes, I really like these...similar to the GW with a longer blade. Thanks for the pics!

My favorites are the ADs and the MSs. I've also been carrying a High Street that I like alot. It may not be as thick as you want though.

I don't really see the appeal in a super-thick knife for EDC. I generally don't do much prying with my EDC knife, and would prefer it to be a better slicer.

I know it's blasphemy around these parts, but my favorite knife for EDC is my Swamp Rat Vex - since it has no choil, guard, or talon hole, and a low profile handle, it packs a lot of cutting edge into a very small package.

The high street is a very cool looking knife, and I obviously would like to sell the one I've got listed, but between the talon hole and the choil, you give up a lot of cutting edge. The flip side of that is that the choil is at least a very functional one - you can really choke up on that High Street for detail work, and with the pointy tip you can do some delicate work.

Still, on a knife this size, I prefer no choil and a thin slicer, and the D2 Swamp Rat Vex fits that bill perfectly.

Honestly, I agree with you. There's really no reason to have such a thick blade on a small knife, but I want one anyway:D

I believe MS = Mean Street. It gets confusing because there's the mean street, meaner street, leaner street, leaner meaner street, etc etc etc etc... The more recent High Street is a more aggressive blade shape variant of the Meaner. I personally like the older meaner better, although since I'm a fan of thin slicers for EDC, the leaner meaner is pretty appealing too. I wouldn't mind having any of those

BAIII would be my pick but it can be a little pricey

Also look at the Mean Street, Meaner Street, High Street, or Active Duty. A little bigger = maybe a BATAC.

I used to think the BAIII (ABA to be exact) was the perfect small fixed blade. After owning one, however, I believe the SHBA to be better for me. As for EDC, the Cultie is VERY underrated, but it won't meet your girth needs.

Go with a fatty warden or AD. The warden will tend to be a bit more comfy to carry (specifically if you've got a little extra in the midsection) because it has a rounded pommel, versus the amorphous pommel on the AD. The AD is a great knife, though.

Honestly, it might be best to flush out some local Austin hogs and see if you can do a little meet-and-greet so that you can try out a few different knives and see what you think fits best.

You will--of course--have to bring some good scotch, but it's a small price to pay when you consider the friends you'll make, and the money you'll save buying the right knife the first time.

Welcome to the trough.

Thanks to all who posted here. Your help was much appreciated. I forgot to mention that I'm moving to Mexico soon, and this is one reason for a small edc. I'm definitely more drawn to the AD's, but after more research and thought, I think I may be "safer" carrying an even smaller blade like the GW.

I think I'll start another thread on suggested leather!

Any Warden makes for a good companion.

If you really want a FAT EDC, keep an eye on these forums on Sunday for the ganzaaaaaa that's coming up. Should be some porky knives up for grabs, if you like 'em chunky.
