Newbie wants EDC recommendation

I would take JJ's first suggestion and go with one of the AD's in the .195 range. The first were the Mili Ganzas that were muddy/tan and sage/black. Then many combos followed at the BCS.
There where a good many and a fairly recent knife, so they can be had at a great price at this time.

You said a 3" to 3.5" blade at least .187 thick. A MAD Sounds like your huckleberry to me:thumbup:

There used to be the Active Duty.

And I do highly recommend it still.

But, for me, now there is only THE ONE.

Original Lean Mean.

I really like that leather sheath with the X-back AND the metal clip. Who makes that one?

Sweet blade profile on that skeleton. That will be the first thing I do when I get one.

Oh, what's a good price for a GW? And who makes the best quality leather sheaths that I could have in my hands within a month?

Yes , I really like the MAD's, but I'm now a little concerned about being really low-key for my indefinite stay in Mexico. A blade as short as possible while still being usable would limit my chances of my blade being confiscated. Although the Duty's are only a half inch longer, they look less like a utility knife than the wardens. Hell, maybe I should just get both!

I think you'll do just fine around here !

Welcome :D

Oh, what's a good price for a GW?

I've been addicted to stalking the Exchange like mad for the past month and it looks like you should be able to get a GW and/or MAD in excellent condition for between $200 and $250 depending on the seller. I'm sure you could find a user for less. When you figure out what you want, you might want to throw an ad up in the Want To Buy section - thats what I did and it worked for me.

Hell, maybe I should just get both!

Go for it!

I was in the same situation you are a few months ago trying to figure out which first Busse to get as EDC - like you, couldn't for the life of me decide between the MAD and GW... I went for both and don't regret it one bit!

Now the tough decision is trying to decide which to carry ;)

Here's a pic with the GW and AD for size comparison. My favorite EDC is a black micarta/mosaic pin Custom Shop Cultie, I like the straight handle and they do look very low key, but you said you wanted something thicker. It does have a solid tip for a .125, unlike the .125 BAD tips.

+1

Cultie isn't THAT much bigger than a GW, has a more utilitarian blade shape (IMHO) and the straight handle is great!

Man, I should have done the two-fer so I could have a snake Cultie.

I have one of the later, thicker (but *not* Fattie) Game Wardens, ~3/16 thick. I also have 2 Swamp Wardens and a Vex.

If I just want a fixed blade available but don't plan on using it, a Swamp Warden (in BB kydex) is the ticket. Works as a necker, too. I don't like things around my neck but I like options, so I made my own paracord breakaway lanyards. It's pretty easy. If you like neckers this is the way to go, definitely.

If I think I might use it and want more comfort, the Vex (in a Leatherman BADASS) is my pick. I'm with MustardMan, I *really* love my Vex.

For me, the GW is just kind of in the middle and never gets picked first. But if you wanted the keep the blade length and OAL down, and wanted scales I'd go with a GW.

I don't own any AD-types, and if I did the first thing I'd do would be to grind off the beak. It's (strictly IMO) unacceptably ugly.

Me to!

Thought I had missed the boat after they went way up in $, but I got lucky and got one from someone looking for a snake GW.

For true EDC, I think the GW is hard to beat. The handle shape is ideal for multiple grip orientations and won't poke you in the ribs when it's on your belt.
