Recently I've posted several questions about the best under $40 folding knife because for the past 35+ years I've just carried a very simple, basic, small, and inexpensive Case type knife and thought it was about time I purchased something better.

After seeing those posts an extremely generous board member here offered to send me a slightly used Kershaw Cryo G10. In two days I had that Cryo G10 in my mailbox! I opened it up and was astounded at how incredible the knife looked...it's difficult for me to even find a place on the knife that even hints that it's been used at all...see the pics! Great big THANK YOU to him!!!

In one of my posts another board member said it would be kinda cool to see the knife, hear my thoughts, and to see what it's like to be a new person in the world of quality knife owning and carrying (and collecting)...so I thought I'd put this post up just to sort of follow through on that request.

My thoughts on the knife after having it a day: just incredible to see and feel the quality of a knife like the Cryo (can't imagine how $500 knives make a substantial jump up from this but I'm sure they do); the weight is supposed to be 3.7 ounces but feels quite substantial in my hand and pocket; my khaki pants pocket will not stand up to this weight but it fits and feels perfect in my blue jeans; when I was looking for a knife I knew I definitely wanted one with a flipper but I enjoy opening the knife with the thumbstuds just as much..I know some say they are useless on this knife but I really like them; the look of the knife is incredible...love the black on one side and silver on the other; the Cryo doesn't allow for deep concealment but not bad; for the few tasks I've used it for so far it has cut super cleanly; definitely looking forward to carrying this on a daily basis for a long time...some day I'll probably look for something lighter to carrying on the pocket of my khakis but for now it will be fine riding along in the pocket; totally stoked at being the owner of this knife!!!

Already had one 'newbie' experience last night with it. Was going to a Blackberry Smoke (southern rock group) concert last night and as we were standing in line (30 degrees, short sleeves, with 1200 other people) my wife said, "it looks as though they are patting people down as they enter, you don't have your knife with you do you?" Of course I do, I just got a Cryo G10 today, it's definitely on me. So at this point we had been gradually moving towards the door...started around 300 yards away and now down to about 75 feet. The car's about a half a mile away...no choice gotta get the knife to the car...probably the fastest I've run since I was in high school. Made it back with about 20 feet to spare. The first thing the guy asked me..."You don't have any knives you need to take back to your car do you?" LOL...no, sure don't!!!

Once again I just want to thank that board member (if he wants to let you know who he is I'll let him do the honors) and all of you for your help and advice.

Proud to be a member of this message board!!!

Welcome to the Forum! It's good to have you aboard. Lot's of really great folks here - some of the best people on the interwebs.

And cool story! Thanks for sharing it and the pics. You'll find it is easier to post images if you get an image hosting account at somewhere like Photobucket or Flikr, etc. Once you upload your pics, you can just copy the IMG link and past it in your post. Easy peasy.

We'll see ya' on the Forum...!

Nice. Glad everything worked out the way it did for you. Also glad you are really liking your new knife... Can't wait to see your next one, and your next, and the one after that, and so forth... ;)

Welcome! That's a great story, and such generosity is not uncommon here. It's always good to see someone new discover the addiction. :)

Cool story, for me was it a CRKT Drifter (loved that thing) that got me going in the whole "modern" folder thing...

Just a quick update....

I've been carrying the knife for about 5 days now...never realized having a quality 'bigger' knife was so useful...have used it so many times in situations where I'd normally go find a pair of scissors or pull a knife out of the kitchen drawer. Love carrying it in everything except my daily work Dockers...too heavy to clip to my pocket and even feels a bit heavy in my pocket. Cannot stop opening and closing this knife...still haven't decided if I prefer using the thumbstuds or the flipper. For me, being a newbie, the flipper seems to be a little quicker and safer. I did order a Lansky Ceramic Four Rod Turn Box sharpening system so I'm looking forward to learning how to sharpen this Cryo.

I can see me carrying this knife for a long time...however, that being said, I think I'm beginning to understand how so many people find collecting knives such an incredible experience...I've already started thinking what I'll be looking for in my future knife...but for right now I'm just going to enjoy the process of carrying and caring for a good quality knife!!!

The Cryo G10 is an excellent "entry knife" for new enthusiasts, as really most Kershaws are. You'll find yourself tempted to get new experiences with opening styles (Spyderco hole, front flipper, etc.), steels, handles and so forth, so my advice is to keep your purchases inexpensive but varied at first, so you discover what you like best. You should buy and sell on the exchange here as well, as doing so not only keeps your cost down but helps members, and most of what is available is usually in great shape, so why not?

One of the best parts about this hobby, to me, is that with so few "moving parts" or things that can legitimately break down, buying a pre-owned knife is an absolute no-brainer most of the time. Also, you can sell for up to 90% or more of what you paid...good luck getting a return like that from selling a used car or bike!

You're exactly where I was a little less than a year ago, so I hope this stuff brings you as much happiness and wisdom as it has me. Knives are fun AND useful, and its high time more people realized it!

That's great advice! I have already been thinking about the next knife I would like to eventually get and was considering a $80 to $100 knife (got Valentine's Day coming up as well as a birthday in June)....but your response has made me realize that maybe I should be looking at a couple less expensive options to see what type(s) of knife I prefer.

I would definitely like to get a smaller Spyderco of some type and maybe the Rat II.

I probably need to stay in the 3" and under blade length and, I'm not sure if I could find this in just one knife, have a knife lighter than my Cryo but yet still able to deep pocket carry.

Thank you very much!

Glad you are enjoying the new blade. I suspect I am little different than most here; my preferences change over time somewhat. I still like those slip joints.

I think that's much more common than not, actually. Preferences for just about everything in our lives varies over time, from cars to knives to food to romantic partners. We are all drifting in a sea of options, slowly changing and evolving.
