Let me start by saying, if this is not the right place for this, I apologize. I’m new here this week, but I’ve been collecting/interacting in the edc communities online for years.

Today is the first time I experienced someone deny to sell me an item for sale because I didn’t have enough feedback. Is this a common thing amongst the blade forums community? I would assume, that as a seller, there is no inherent risk to selling to someone new if your item is paid in full up front. Your feedback and guidance is welcomed and appreciated.

I've seen it everywhere I am where there is B/S/T for anything. I wouldn't say it's specific to bladeforums or to knife folks.

There are a few ways it can bite the seller. For one, it's a rule here that a deal isn't done until both sides are satisfied. If you as a buyer come in saying there was some issue unspecified so want a refund or discount--which has been known to happen--for the seller it's at least a hassle and lost time and you're out at least the shipping cost.

Some people don’t want to do business with brand new members who aren’t established yet, not necessarily speaking about “feedback” either, new members who are participating in the discussions are establishing themselves that way. Don’t take it personal and just look forward to next time.

Fair enough, but then we’re back to the can’t get feedback because no one wants to sell to the guy without feedback cycle

You're right that makes it harder. Its not the case that no one will sell to someone without feedback though. Also, some folks just want the person to have more engagement outside of buying and selling--meaning they look to deal with people trying to be part of the community rather than who are here to buy and sell only and who often readily disappear if there is an issue. For those, just posting more in other sections of the forum will let you in.

Each sale is going to have varying requirements set by the seller.

There has been a history of new members taking advantage of the exchange by several different methods, so a few folks are bound to have levels of discretion on who they sell too.

It is what it is.

Welcome to the forums, my friend! Less than two years ago I was in the same spot as you are. And to make matters worse, the first couple transactions I made, I got scammed both times to the tune of six hundred bucks. It was right before Christmas. So just be careful with what you do and always be a man of your word and you will soon have no problem buying or selling. Best of luck!

What do you want to buy? If I have it, I'll sell it to you.

Especially difficult if you’re selling as a new member of a group. Just went through this selling pricey blades on a FB knife group despite 13 years of good feedback here and elsewhere. Worked out after “proving myself” at least to a few. Apparently scamming is rampant and a lot of good people prefer to deal exclusively with people they know.

Rmj Jenny Wren, no worries though. I created an account to inquire about a couple listings I found here on the forums. (They were less than retail. And I’m going to use it thoroughly so I wasn’t looking for a safe queen.)

The scamming on FB in the past 18 mos has gotten absurd. Admins have a full time job filtering through fraudulent accounts

Which is the problem. Not only do you not have feedback, but you have no time or participation either. Even without feedback participation can indicate something about you. Since this forums exchange is visable to non members, it can attract scammers as well as legit buyers. There are ways for buyers to scam. I personally have no problem with new members, but join today members looking for high price items make me nervous, and I might require payment by USPS money order in that circumstance.
Each seller will have their own criteria to whom they will sell.

I see you just joined here. This is a wonderful site for trading and discussion, of course, and bad apples are quickly “outed.” I much prefer to trade here. I found a couple of professionally administered FB groups for certain high-end pieces. Otherwise, I loathe FB. Luckily, I’ve had 100% good trades here and feel most comfortable here.

Honestly, I'm one of these. If someone wants to simply buy a knife, go to a regular dealer. I am here more for the experience and the engagement with others who enjoy the hobby like I do. That being said, C CataD was the first member to sell to me and my account was brand new (I think I only made it so he'd make the sale) and I've always appreciated the risk he took on selling to a brand new member. I would take the risk so long as I didn't see any major red flags.

There is always a risk factor, whenever transacting with anonymous people via the internet. When you factor in dealing with a brand new person with zero feedback history, it only increases that risk.

If I were to offer you 1 bit of sound advise: Buy a membership!

A Basic Membership on BF's is only $10, and, it gives you the privilege to both send/receive, private messages. Excellent communication between 2 parties is key, in facilitating any business transaction. If a seller is reluctant to deal with you, then send him a brief intro along with your phone number. I've never hesitated dealing with a newer member here, whom I've spoken with on the phone.

There have been quite a few hacked accounts and generally bad situations recently. I would assume people are just covering their asses so to speak. I personally don't pay too much attention to feedback myself. I would agree with the get a gold membership thing though. People usually don't spend money on an account they plan to burn.

Welcome to you and the OP.

I'm in no way saying you are, but there have been several scammers run through here in the last year or so. The admin to an amazing job of jumping on it ASAP when it happens, but they aren't mind readers so it takes someone taking a loss to expose it.

I think many ... myself included are just a bit more leary and like to buy/sell/trade with members that participate outside of the exchange also. I haven't bought and sold a bunch on here, but I found back when I joined as I spent time here and participated in the forums I was welcomed in and have made many friends.

As frustrating as it might be hang in there and jump into some threads. Before you know it you'll not only be able to buy and sell, you'll have people helping you find what you're looking for ... welcoming you in and watching out for you just like they do each other now. It won't take as long as you might think. Lots of good people on BF.
