Hey I'm a huge blade lover, wouldn't claim to be much of a knife maker but I have allways been very interested in it.

I wish there was a place for beginners only to post there pics and questions, as our stuff looks like crudd next to the amazing work I see from you guys, but I thought I'd throw up a few pics anyway.:)

I do not have access to all the propper tools and materials right now, but useing a basic large belt sander I made these out of a couple of mill bastard files...

My first knife ever:

and my second attempt:

Obviously I have a lot to learn, but I realy enjoyed making these, and I would love to get more serious about it and get some real tools and equipment some day.

Which brings me to a question I'm sure you guys hear all the time... With a budget of say $5000 could I get enough of the basics to make some decent knives? ...useing the stock removal method that is.

Any advice about realisticaly how much it costs to get started, and specifically what does a beginner like me need first?

Thanks in advance. -Bryan

im new to the knife making my self i know about ugly me made knifes to me your on the way with few tools it looks pretty good to me hope everyone well give you some good info

Not a bad start.
If it's something you enjoy there's no way you can go wrong.
Keep at it.

that you stated you were a huge blade lover is underscored by your effort in designing and making these two. You are walking the walk.
Great first effort man!

In my opinion you did very well.My first and second knife were not this good.I hope we'll see more in the future.

Keep at it! I wish my first couple of knives looked that good. Good work!

In order to not be limited, the first thing you need is a good belt grinder. A 2x72" will provide almost unlimited choice of belts. I use, or did use, a KMG with a variable speed. The variable speed is a great asset, I think.

A drill press is another essential, if you do not want to be limited.

A band saw will be very nice to have.
I think you can get these things and more on your budget.
Best wishes, Don
