Hello. Just got my first Hinderer(3 inch). Before I really dive into this beauty, I'm taking my time preparing. First, I'm new to sharpening and bought a DMT Aligner Pro Kit. Is this a good choice? Is 20 degrees the right angle? Second, should I go with the RH tool(SS or PVD) or the Monkey Edge tool? Thank you and forgive me for the newby questions. I just want to do right by this awesome knife.

Ricks edges are usually between 23-26 degrees... So will be slightly off with the 20 degress, but close.... They recommend not go any less than 22 degrees...

I have the Hinderer SS tool and love it.. Very useful and easy to take with you if you choose... You will need to buy the bit for the 3" XM which is the 1/16th allen for the scale screws.

the hinderer xm armorers tool gets my vote maybe an additional phillips bit from wiha for the clip/filler tab

congrats - your 3" slicer looks great!

Thanks to both of you. So it's the RH armorers tool and position #5 on the DMT which is 24 degrees.

The armorers tool has my vote by far. Really cool little tool!

I have an aligned kit from DMT that I sometimes use and if I'm not mistaken, I believe I used that last spot as well for my 3". Now I do it freehand with just the red/blue/green pieces, which I highly recommend if you want to ever try that down the road. Definitely worth learning. That way I always use the edge Rick put on it and now have to re-profile the edge.

I do want to eventually do freehand. The aligner is like the training wheels on my first bike.:)

It really does. I like the fact that it's made by them in the shop as well...very cool.

I'm no fool. I'm getting their tool. The willingness of this group to take the time to help an RHK newby out is greatly appreciated.

Also if you don't clip it to your pocket. A good holster is nice piece to think about. I carry mine in a leather horizontal holster all the time.

A holster is a good idea, but part of what I love about the knife is its' gorgeous stone wash. I feel free from worrying about scratches. Still... A bit of the top is visible above the pocket, and sometimes I might wish to be a bit more covert. Ok.. A holster is something to think about. Thanks.

I personally love the look of the bit showing from the pocket. Especially when it says Hinderer.
I however carry tip up. I use a nice holster for my decorated sebenza, but for a stonewashed tank, I like the raw pocket look.

Good point about covert carry though

Carry that knife in your pocket, It is very hard to scratch a Hinderer, and if you do your just adding character. The pocket gives you very easy access to your knife and quick access as well. Enjoy it but above all use it

Enjoy it but above all use it

So agree. The first RHK I saw was years ago and it was used and had a ton of character and stories of what it was used on. My friend used it in the field and it held up perfectly. That's what started my journey with them. They cost a bit more but they last and will take more abuse than many other knives. All of mine are used and enjoyed each time I flip her open. Have fun and look forward to many more. 😉

My unwavering intention is for this to be a user. The stone wash knocks me out. I like it so much that I just sold a nice watch in order to get my next Hinderer(something more tactical). That will be a user too.

Haha. Uh oh. The sickness has ahold of you now. What else do I have that I can sell??!! I need another hinderer! Haha. We've all been there buddy. You are in good company. The problem comes when you run out of things to sell. ;)

Lmao! Yeah man I swear that I.O.U. is good!!

Just need a taste man. Just a sak or a Kershaw . I'll get you back on Friday I swear. You know I'm good for it.

Ha Ha. I'm laughing at myself, too. At least I'm not yet selling my blood at the blood bank. The hard part wasn't selling the watch. It's now that I have the money, I'm like a crazy person looking for the right one(available), here, there; everywhere. Love how this thread morphed from seeking sharpening advice into a desperate cry for help.:)

LMAO...Yes H.A.S. (Hinderer Acquisition Syndrome) is a sickness but a great one to be sick with as long as you have the $ or things to sell off 😉
