Newby hinderer maintenance question

When you get to point when all you have to sell off is other Hinderers, that's when you really have a problem. A good problem but still a problem!

I thank everybody for their guidance. The thread has morphed and you have all been kind, so permit me, please another question. I'm now looking for either an Eklipse or an XM-18/ 3.5 Gen 4. I'm not holding my breath for the Eklipse(), so my question is in reference to Slicer. vs. Spanto. My 3 inch is perfect for EDC. I want the blade that works best for CC SD application. It would seem that Spanto is the right choice, but I'm a Hinderer Newby. Do I have it right? I see a gen 4 Spanto available, used, but minty in my favorite stone wash finish. Thanks.

I have an XM24 arriving Monday (hopefully). I has 2 scales, and I want to switch it immediately. What tools do I need to do that? The handle screws are not Torx correct? Are the allen?

The 3" XM-18 has a specific set of screws, the XM-18 3.5" and XM-24 use the same screws.

Bit Sizes:

3" Model - 1/16" Hex
3.5" and XM-24 - 5/64" Hex

Try the spanto out... It's Rick's iconic grind.... As far as the stonewash goes you can use them and not even notice they have been. So if you can see both sides and agree go on ahead..

The SW hides so very much use it's nearly unbelievable.

The spanto just screams tough and robust. Really impressed with this grind. It just looks and feels so strong. Some blades give you a dainty fragile feel, even if that's not the case. Not the spanto. This things feels indestructible, it gives you confidence when under hard use.

For CC/SD applications, I'd say the Wharncliffe grind. Is has a SUPER sharp point for penetration and is thinner ground like the slicer for slashing. Disclaimer: I'm not a knife fighter, I'm just making more of an observation.

Flashpoint. Or the more difficult to acquire small wharncliffe fixed blades.

The Wharncliffe(a blade shape of which I'm very fond) will be added to my new herd(2 is a herd, right?) later. I did my latest obsessive scanning of Hinderer Dealers today and found an unused, previously owned XM-18 3.5 Gen4 Spanto in glorious Stone Wash. All of you Rock!

Another spanto celebration shorting a life here too.

Agreed!!! Just went to White Castle for some jalapeño sliders. Not even close to what you guys ate but it filled the rumbling in the tummy. LOL 😉

What's up, killer? It seems that you and I have taken the same path to ruin. And, we have the same people guiding us. I was infected by the Hinderer bug - and the accompanying bank drafts - shortly after you and I chatted. Glad to see you are in the mix, as well. I don't know nearly as much as the guys who are helping you out, but they have answered some of the same questions for me, so feel free to hit me up.

Later.

It's great hearing from you. I will always be grateful that our paths crossed on BFs. I feel that Hinderers are worthy of time, expense, and the learning curve involved. The people here show, tell, teach, and inspire effortlessly. Even though I'm older, I sometimes feel like a little kid sitting at the adult table.:) Thank you for your offer. Anything I can do for you..Just ask.

Just to pipe in - I am full on advocating the RHK tool. I have both, and I have to say that the small PSD tool is great for striders (the one that fits a 1/4" bit), but the cross-shaped dual PSD tool is unwieldy and will bang up your pivot. At least it will if you are me with my sausage fingers. The RHK tool is much more suited to the task. If you want to keep your pivot screw looking nice, get a short, fat, flat blade screwdriver and put a piece of duct tape over the tip. I don't obsess too much, but if you can keep it from looking like shit & have an excuse to cut duct tape with your new Hinderer, I say do it.

Cigarrodog, I actually mentioned your user name to a guy just the other day. I totally agree. I have met some really cool people on these forums, and you are without a doubt high up there. For some reason, I had no problems with trusting you right off the bat. I am glad to see that I have good instincts. Ross was the same way. Solid people roam these halls. Now, I am gonna go before I start getting hounded for this "bromance."
