One of my most favorite woods.

I was at Woodcraft a few years back and admired a big block of select grade amboyna burl they had priced at $150. I was talking to an old chap about working that type wood and he said he had a much bigger block at his shop he bought 20 years earlier, planning to turn a big bowl. He never could work up the courage to turn it, as it had the normal inherent crack lines here and there. I asked if he wanted to sell it, and he said he would trade it to me for a kitchen knife with the wood on the handle. I got about 40 primo handles from that block ( still have some of them).

About 10 years ago, Joe at Cue Components had a 3 x3 x18 stick of amboyna marked down to like $99. I snapped that up and it was perfect! Not a check or void to be found anywhere in the stick!

Turning blanks can be a great source of material. I've bought a number of nice rosewood 4x4x12" peppermill blanks from a local woodworking store over the last while. It worked out to less than $25 a board foot

I got a very good deal on pink iviry once, it was a B choice pool cue blank.
It still had many knife handle blocks in it
