I just took the plunge and bought me a NIB 2001 large BG-42 regular sebbie "High Circle" and it's freaking awesome! The action is smooth as silk, the blade alignment is perfect, the lockup is solid, and the more I play with it the more I like it. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.:D

EDIT: Pictures are at the bottom of the page:cool:

thanks y'all but quick question: My b-day card says 2001 but my handle scales says "A 00" I'm guessing 2000. Which one is it? and any way to tell if it's BG-42? because in '01 is where CRK switched to CPM-S30V.

What is the full date on the b-day card? If it is toward the beginning of the year I can see the handles being made the year before. The dates on the handles are when they are made not when the knife is complete (my understanding).

Only way I can tell is the b-day card. I am sure that people with a lot of experience with BG42 have other ways. I only have one BG42 blade and I never carry it.

Hope it helps,
STICF

The date is April 23, 2001

I was hoping for the a date in Q1. Hopefully a more knowledgeable member will help out.

take the knife apart, if it's s30v it is marked with an S, if it's bg42 the blade is unmarked

bg42 handles also have ridges/lines on the side of the handles (but I don't know if ALL the bg42's have that)

the date stamp on the handle is when it's made, it could have been lying at the bottom of a box for a year?, A00 is the beginning of 2000

so should I just ignore the b-day card then?

Welcome!

BTW, an unofficial prerequisite to the Seb club
is a pic of your new baby for us! :D

Transition period and repaired knives can be a
mix-match of some parts to a degree.

Maybe before you tear it apart... -Ron

I wouldn't worry about it.

I have noticed this on a few Sebbies (which I acquired new from CRK authorized dealers). Sometimes the scale stamp pre-dates the birthday card, and on at least one of my Sebs, the scale stamps don't even match (again, purchased NIB from a CRK authorized dealer).

I believe that the all of the parts for Sebenzas are made in large batches. The stamp on the scale most likely refers to when the scale itself was manufactured, while the birthday card date is probably the final date on which the knife was tested, and packaged for distribution. CRK's DVD even shows an employee filling out the birthday cards before packing up the knives.

As to which steel you have, checking the blade for an "S" would be the best indicator. IIRC, CRK switched from BG42 to S30V in January of 2002. If your scale says "A00" and your B-day card says 4-23-2001, most likely you have a BG42 blade ;).

Thanks guys for being so patient with me and answering all of my stupid questions:thumbup::cool:

Sorry guys, I tried to get the A00 in the handles but the camera wouldn't focus:grumpy:

If you guys have any questions about the pictures or want more pictures feel free to ask

P.S. Sorry you had to see the unsightly dry skin:o

I stand corrected:foot::o

Those are nice pics, outstanding knife, thanks.
Great score, most of us have to wait years for a knife like that.
My Lg. Reg. BG42 is my favorite Sebbie EDC by far.

It looks like you have about a 50% lockup so I bet that opens easy.
If you use mineral oil (non-toxic) for knife lube it is safer for kitchen use.
I also had chapped hands and the mineral oil helped clear them up.:)

Congrats, -Ron

thanks for the kind words:D

The sebbie opens very easily, like it's skating on butter

Yea I was very lucky to score this sebenza.....Now I'm addicted and want another one:eek:

I am currently using machine oil as that is the only thing I have. How good is that against other oils? And Is machine oil toxic for kitchen use?

Where do I go to acquire some mineral oil? And what Grade(heavy, medium, light, etc)?

I wouldn't drink machine oil.. :barf:

There is a lot of hype on fancy expensive knife lubricants.

I just wash my knife out with my hands - liquid hand soap. Dry.

Mineral oil is in the laxitive section of your drug store.
Baby oil is mineral oil with fragrance. (AKA paraffin oil).
Usually one grade but if they have two go lighter.
A 6 oz bottle is a couple bucks. A needle/pointed applicator bottle helps.
Just a drop on the pivot area.

Mineral oil and a very fine large ceramic stone is all I've used for years..

cool thanks:thumbup:

wouldn't the lighter grade mineral oil be runny compared to the heavier grades? And what are the advantages of using lighter grade (lubing knife pivots wise) against the heavier grade?
