So I don't know if any of you have noticed, but I'm slightly obsessed with fire making/fire starting methods. And I really like the fool proof/worst case scenario type.

On to a couple of my newest:
first up, the tinder box
DSC02872.jpg

this is made up of fatwood shavings, a dry cotton ball, dry jute twine, wax soaked jute twine, a massive pile of the powder from a road flare, the last compartment is for a fire paste soaked cotton ball

up next is the "Lite but Effective"
DSC02855.jpg

consists of duct tape, the powder from a road flare, and a cotton ball to ignite the whole thing

Last but not least is the O.O.I.C.O.E. fire starter, if you're wondering, it's Open Only In Case Of Emergency

it is: fatwood shavings, misch metal shavings, jute twine all soaked in wax, topped with more dry fatwood shavings, more misch metal shavings, then topped with gobs of the flare powder, and tomorrow I'm adding a FirePaste soaked cotton ball on top

gruntinhusaybah, welcome to my pyromaniacs club!

You would love to get hold of a big pot of magnesium turnings. When I was teaching chemistry, I used more for playing around lighting fires than for teaching chem!

The kids loved making their own fireworks with sugar, potassium nitrate and a handful of magnesium shavings, all poured into a rolled-up cardboard tube.

I like that idea of making gaffer tape parcels with you mixtures. That tape is pretty much waterproof; it's currently stopping my house wall from leaking in! Your parcels are sort of like a fire straw on steroids!

Damn bro! You are borderlining needing an explosives license!!! The ATF is gonna think your making pipe bombs!

Cool.:cool::thumbup:

gruntinhusaybah,
Those are great fire starting ideas.
I really like your idea of a O.O.I.C.O.E. can. It is just the answer to what do I do if I am cold, hurt and need a fire now.

Great idea on the road flare powder. I'd really like to see a product made for fire starting that is like a mini road flare. Something about the size of a 35mm film can with a striker/igniter. A felt-tip marker size/shape would work too. It could double for signaling.

Matches? We don't need not stinking matches!!!

I too spend a lot of time practicing gathering and igniting wood. I agree they are critical wllderness skills. I am allowed to harvest downed wood from a neighbor's lot. I am learning to spot/harvest different types of wood, decayed, fatwood, hard wood, soft wood. I am also learning how to efficiently harvest with a small pocket ax and a SAK saw on my huntsman.

I practice igniting technique w/ PJ lint balls and a fire striker. Sometimes I add mag. scrapings. Cool stuff!

good firestartin stuff grunt  Makes me want to go make and package some fatwood shavings.

bomb...bomb...bomb....bom-ba-bomb...bomb.....

You cant say bomb on a forum!!!!!!! hehe

Seriously though, I am gonna make some of that stuff up. It looks cool, and I get the feeling you need to see it work to get the whole experiance. Too cool!!
