Afternoon, all. After finally getting serious about wanting to learn more about knives, I decided to join this forum. So I guess I should give an introduction.

I'll be honest, I don't know jack squat about knives. I was in Boy Scouts when I was younger, and was a few merit badges away and a project away from completing my Eagle. I've been around knives for a long time, but I didn't know much about them. I'm more of a gun guy and have completed an armorers course and I'm into NFA items. My knife experience is pretty much nill. I really only have four knives in my collection. The first is my first real knife my father gave me when I was in Boy Scouts, a silver frame locked Gerber. The next is a Kabar that was my grandfathers, and it was his do all outdoors knife. It is probably around 50 or 60 years old. The next two are both Benchmades, a tan serrated Presidio automatic and a Griptialian that I just bought. I've had the Presidido for around three or four years, and I'm just now getting it fixed after having the lock work broken on it for around 2 years. I bought the Griptilian because I wanted something lighter for EDC, and because I just found out that unless a person is Mil/Leo/first responder it is illegal to carry an automatic knife. So, finding that out I ordered a Griptialian to be in compliance with the law.

I know that is a very long winded intro, but I'm very eager to learn about knives and how to maintain them. I'm really looking at how to sharpen them and maintain a correct edge on a knife. I've already started combing through the maintenance section of the forum. I do have a question though, does anybody recommend any books about proper knife maintenance? I know there is some great info on this forum, but I'd like to have something in my library to reference to. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks and have a blessed day!

Welcome! How about a 25 words or less version? It's the weekend, and the boys are drinking beer and shooting off fireworks, so they are easily distracted.

In fact, hold my beer and watch this!

My knife showed up today

I like that rifle!

Books are hard to recommend, simply because a book will be one person's opinion. I would highly recommend spending some quality reading, you'll be amazed at the depth and breadth of expertise on this forum, welcome!

Thanks, it's a 1 of 50 that was a special order by my local shop, Modern Outfitters. It's a LWRC IC-A5, before the A5 was a production gun. It's got a SAA-e trigger and a custom cerakote in German field grey, which is the same color as the ww2 uniform.

Check out YouTube. Lots of stuff depending on what you're looking to get yourself into.

Freehand on stones.

Guided system like a wicked edge or edge pro. (Expensive)

Or probably a good place to start is with a spyderco sharpmaker. Very good for maintaining a pocket knife.

Nice gun!

Sorry, I'm somewhat still a newbie when it comes to sharpening and knife maintenance myself. Don't know of any knife care books, but a DVD and pamphlet came with the Spyderco Sharpmaker I ordered to teach myself to sharpen knives. Can you post up a pic of the tan Auto Presidio? I have a black one myself that I EDC at work, but never knew they made a tan version.

It's coming back home in the mail tomorrow according to the big brown box. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow when I get it. It's got a lot of wear on the grips. Is yours serrated? Mine is.

Sweet, looking forward to it. Yep, mine is serrated and has its share of wear on the handle. Gives it nice character in my opinion. I bought it used on another forum. Been carrying it ever day at work since I got it a couple years ago. It was my very first Benchmade and also my first/only automatic as well. Here is a pic of mine from a couple weeks back:

I was just on the Dozier website where they have a video of how they sharpen. I would like to see you learn to sharpen freehand before you get a 'system' .

Welcome to the home of the shameless enablers that love spending your money!!
Great pic!! That Grip will put a smile on your face every time you snap it open......all my Axis lock knives are a pleasure and loads of fun to play with!
I would also love to see a pic of your auto when it gets back!

It's on the brown box bus right now being delivered to a friends house. Should be back by today. I'm excited to get it back, it's been out of commission for almost three years.

Not to sound like a snob, but I don't think I could get another locking mechanism. The Axis makes a lot sense to me, and even though my Presidio had a broken spring the Axis lock never failed. Even when I used it to split some small wood.

As requested here is my Presidio back from the warranty work from Benchmade. Per the work order they replaced the following: liners, springs, stop pin, safety lock, bushings, pivot, washers and the screws. It was cleaned, inspected, adjusted oiled, and sharpened. Gotta say, it feels like a brand new knife. I wish I could get some better close up shots of all the wear, dings, and scratches that are on the handles. I'm very satisfied with their customer service. This was also my first benchmade knife too.
