I am fairly new at this but have put several items up for trade. If someone
tells me their knife is NIB or even LNIB, can I assume it still has the sheath
with it that it came from the factory with? If I can not assume that, &
have to ask, then do I need to become ridiculous & ask if the blade is still
in the knife? This may sound stupid but to me a factory included sheath
is no different than a factory included box. I have waited for this to happen
twice before asking this question. Thanks in advance Bob

Unfortunately LNIB is an objective standard. You should ask as many questions as you need, including obvious ones. Also ask for an insepction period for those things you might notice once it gets there.

The general rule of thumb is take nothing for granted. If you need to know anything specific, anyways ask first.

To assume, as my lecturer said, should be split up to make;

ASS out of U and ME

Never make an assumption over anything not mentioned.

I could not agree more! Ask questions about any concerns you might have. I have found that "mint" does not mean unmarred to everyone, even though that is the definition of mint. Insist on photos at least of both sides of the knife, and maybe the top & bottom too, that are clear enough to reveal most any concern (even then minor defects might not show up well in a photo). Spell out the terms of the inspection period before a deal is made.

are ya talking about the sheath for a fixed blade or a folder? all the FB's i have ever gotten had a sheath (if they came w/a sheath some dont, ie Busse IIRC), some of the folders have not though, microtechs seem to sometimes have them/sometimes not lol. BM's too.

always ask if ya have questions imho. that way ya know for sure (most of the time anyway lol)

LNIB refers to a knife that looks 100% albeit might have been carried a time/2 or cut an envelope/etc. no scuffs/scratches/dings/etc at all. maybe the edge cleaned up on a sharpmaker.

NIB refers to a new in the box knife never carried/never cut/never-rarely opened/etc. edge is factory fresh/never touched.

to me anyway........
