anyone with a review on the UJI, $50 is a great price, how's the blade finish/sheath design/overall? i had a "WOO" and the finish seemed a little rough and the draw was very tight?

the uji is a good knife, well built and cost effective. Within it's design limits, that is. It is designed to be a pure defensive weapon. It is not a skinner, a hunter, or even a utility knife. It is chisel-ground, with a strong stabbing point. It has a servicable sheath, and it is inexpensive enough to be disposable.

I have one , but it is anything but disposable. I orderted a custom one with tsabi (crossgaurd), and wood scales . What I got was a mirror polished blade, 1000 year old ironwood scales with embeded turquose chips , and a great tsabi. This is THE FINEST tanto that I have ever seen . I'll post pics later.

joebe, check out Newt Livesay's site. Last time I checked they were having a sale on this knife, and I think it was around 37 dollars.

I had Newt make me a Uji without the lateral curve in the spine, hoping to make it a more generally useful utility blade. Only sorta worked, but that's what I get for trying to crowbar a fighting pattern into a kitchen knife. The expectations were wrong on my part. FWIW at about the same price as I paid for the Uji, the Executive NRGS neck knife I got from him is an amazingly handy utility knife.

The construction of the Uji I have is good for the price point. It may not win a beauty contest, but that's not what I buy Newt's blades for. On the Uji handle the micarta scales with grooves in them haven't slipped yet in my experience. But the lack of a guard always makes me a bit nervous about my fingers sliding up onto the blade. Like the other Livesay blades I own, this one seems to have a really hard edge. I think he's got his heat treat nailed down solid.

After considerable effort getting used to sharpening the chisel grind, it again has a sharp edge on it. It came sharp NIB, I messed the edge up trying to learn how to sharpen it, then finally got it back to somewhat sharp again. Not sure I like chisel grinds or if I'll get another one.

As Joebe mentioned above on his Woo sheath, the sheath on my Uji is also pretty tight. But that may be a necessary trait for a neck sheath that is holding a full-size blade inverted. If the stiff draw were a show-stopper for me, it could easily be remedied with a heat gun.

I have one.
I thought the blade was a little thin, but it cuts well, and is very sharp. I think it makes a very good utility knife, which is what I use it for.
Also, on the model I got, the grooves were very small and shallow. It hasn't improved the grip at all. I wouldn't think of using it as a tactical knife, unless it was the only knife I had on me.
The Kydex sheath on mine is too loose.
