Have been lurking for some time and to date have purchased these 3 knives to start a collection:

CRKT Ripper
Mcusta Basic M-25
Spyderco Sage 4

Am planning to buy an additional 5 folders this year:
3 under $200 and
2 between $200 and $800.

if you were just getting started, with this budget, which 5 folders would you buy?

under $200
Spyderco:
Stretch super blue
Gayle bradley
ZT:
0801 rexford

Under $800
I'd go custom, but production would be a CRK sebenza of your choice, maybe a unique graphic.

After my wedding in July, I plan to buy:

1. CRK Sebenza Carbon fiber or inlayed
2. Brous Mini Division
3. ZT 0808
4. Spyderco PM2 in something other than S30V
5. Strider SnG in something other than S30V

The Zero Tolerance 0562CF would be a great addition to any collection IMHO. That is if you can find one right now.

Many great custom knives could be purchased for $200-800.

Thanks for the recommendations!

RE custom knives.. do you purchase custom knives in inventory or do you contact the maker directly with specs of what you are looking for and get it made?

yes, it looks great (just watched YouTube review) and
no, you can't find one right now (out of stock everywhere)
:)

The Benchmade 710 also comes to mind. it's simple and a classic.

Your first three are pretty diverse. I usually buy something different every time too, for a good range of blades and (uses).

To go further in folders you might look at:
---HEST 2.0 (outdoor)
---Al Mar SERE 2000 (EDC)
---Emerson CQC-7 or 15 ("tactical")
---A Chris Reeve knife--fancy (select carry)
---for the big fish I'd skip the clunky mid-techs and go full custom in a 3-3.5" blade. (safe queen)

That's one way I'd get the most kick out of a budget and keep some air in the types and styles. Some folks like to have everything similar though...

Er, you DO have a SAK, right?

Hi Echoil..

Yes have 4 SAKs and several flashlights.. For me, these were 'gateway drugs' to a folder collection. One other thing that contributed is watching a movie/doc on sushi.. It featured some of the Japanese Sushi Knife producers in Seki..

Yes, see it as you do and want to end up with a cross section of high quality, beautiful, and functional folders.

It's great having a resource like this with the perspective of people that have insight.. Thank you so much for all the suggestions.. Have a good list going..

That's an exceptional budget, this man is serious! :)

Here's what I'd do:

Under $200
- ZT 0560
- Benchmade 940
- Quartermaster Hannibal

Between $200 - $800
- CRK Large Sebenza
- Chavez Redencion... or better yet, just buy one of these for you, and one for me!!

Under $200 -
ZT 0560
Benchmade Adamas
Spyderco Military

$200-$800 -
CRK Sebenza
Hinderer XM-18
Strider SMF

For the higher end ones, pick the two that fit your style the best. They are all great knives.

A custom slipjoint like an oeser or Davison and a Sebenza in the $200-$800. For the three under: Spyderco UKPK in carbon fiber or g10; jk element in 01 fixed blade choice of custom scale, tossup between a spyderco domino, Kershaw camber, elmax blur, Elmax zt or kizer flipper in s35.

You'll need a seb!

This ^^^. A Sebenza is mandatory as far as I'm concerned. It's the folder I use to judge the quality of every other folder in my collection. Large or small, inlaid or plain, doesn't really matter. It just depends on what appeals most to you.

You'll also need a Buck 110 and a SAK. Why? Because no folder collection is complete without them. :)
