Thinking about pickin up a new camp gun, I'm looking at one of the Remington overunder comboguns in .22lr over .410 I figure this'll be great for plinking, small game, and the .410 at close range while not the best is definitely not bad as a self defense round with the right load. Any Thoughts??

RR,
I am not to fond of the combo guns, some people rave about them though. IMO they don't do either role as a shotgun or rifle as well as a dedicated model, I had a savage 22 over 20 gauge. I could not scope the 22 and was stuck with the crappy factory sights, and the comb was too high to throw the shot where I was looking and it was too heavy for a double barrel. Chris

hard to beat a good shotgun. You can shoot slugs and have many different choices on shot size. Maverick 88 by mossberg is a good choice for little money. I like the Benelli M2.

I myst admit having little experience with combo guns but i have had good experiences with new england and other brands exchange barrel guns. a 22 and a 20 guage barrel are a good combo to bring along, Taurus and savage both make nice models for reasonable prices.

I've owned at least a couple of the Savage over/under combo guns, and each for quite a few years. The concept has a lot of appeal, but in my opinion it just doesn't work that well in the real world. At least the .22/.410 and the .22/20 gauge I remember well didn't work out for me. They just didn't feel right or handle well. The idea of an O/U combo gun sounds good for a "survival gun," but I think I'd do just as well with a good .22 that handles much better. The best combination would be both a .22 and a shotgun. A semi-auto .22 rifle along with a light single-shot shotgun (12 gauge or 20 gauge, maybe with a couple of chamber adapters for pistol/revolver cartridges) seems best to me.

Yeah, I agree up till now Ive been using a 20 gauge Rem spartan coachgun, and its awesome but way loud....Was toying w/ the poss of picking up a .22 I was thinking of a marlin papoose but I heard some bad things, Now I'm looking at a small single shot, or perhaps a small leveraction

My truck/camp guns... 1st-NEF 12 guage- painted with Alumahyde, nylon sleeve on but for extra rounds; 2nd- Ruger 10/22 SS/laminated stock. 75.00 NEF even gets bungeed to the ATV rack(unloaded of course!). I never liked combos much either.

I picked up a CZ scout to replace my Marlin papoose, as a camp gun. With the 16 1/2 inch barrel its just about as small as my papoose was, and almost as light, but WAY more accurite and reliable. It came with the five shot magazine, but I have a couple of the 10 shots on order. Fit and finish of the CZ is very impressive, and it's bottle cap accurite at 50 yards with the open sights it came with. And being a bolt action, aside from being very accurite and reliable, it feeds anything you put in it-LR, shorts, CB caps. You can pot a rabbit close to camp with not much more report than a kids cap pistol.

Small, light, accurite, and reliable. The CZ scout is my new camp gun.

Mossberg 500

IMHO Cannot be beat with iron sights. Hammer tough, reliable and can load up slugs to reach out to 100 yds or down to birdshot and put small game on the fire.

Yeah over all I'm prety happy with my 20 gauge coach gun in the shotgun dept. Versatile as all getout, and a nice defensive piece. However a .22 is percieved (at least by otheres to be a little less threatening) and the ability to shoot quieter loads makes it less likely to Attract undue attention. Plus it's a nice thing to add to the collection. Does anyone know if the Cz scout can be modified to be taken down?

I have a papoose it prints nickle/dime sized patterns at 150 feet. No problems with it (maybe I got lucky). Mostly it resides in the gun safe as I don't care to hike with long guns.
Enjoy!

Sure, there is one screw that holds the barreled action in the stock, the easiest thing to do would be to modify the screw with a coin slot. Keep in mind the scout is a very small bolt action in the first place, built on CZs rock solid 452 action.

If you are thinking of a 22, a scout should be at the top of your list, I have owned 4 CZs and everyone of them shot like a house afire. I am talking about a stock rifle shooting 1/2 moa at 50 yds with ammo the rifle likes. Chris

CZ452's are WONDERFUL rifles! :) I modified and older Rem bolt .22 to takedown. I bedded the action, installed steel piler flush with outside of stock and had a checkered knob welded onto a peice of threaed rod, trim to fit and a handy takedown it was. The steel pillar helps with consistant POI after takedown.

Why not just a .410? Lead shot for potting small critters, and slugs for more "challenging" targets. As some have stated here, the sights on most of the "combo" guns are less than stellar, pretty much rendering accuracy moot with the .22 barrel. JMHO.

another vote for the RUGER 10/22. I had one as a kid, most often used plinking gun. I think with an aftermarket folding stock it would be the best survival/plinking gun for the money. (since you mentioned keeping it compact for hiking.

I've never owned a combo, but i think I would rather have a .22 in a wilderness situation, because it is lightwieght, decently accurate and relatively quiet vice a shotgun (which is much heavier and less compact.) Great small game getter!

Have you considered a Ruger MKIII pistol? This might also be a good/relatively inexpensive choice.

I currently reside in NYC although I make frequent trips to the bush....Anything with a folding stock is considered an assault rifle in my location, and Living where I do I have a better chance of getting a date with Angelina Jolie than I do of getting a handgun permit.
