Next campgun

My brother has one They are extremely portable but little else they are not big on accuracy, jam frequently, and seem highly breakable if actually subjected to the rigors of a survival sit. For a truck/plinking gun It seems good, but for anything more hardcore...Let's just say I wouldn't want to depend on it. (No offense to any of the Henry survival rifle fans out there) just my 02

Ruger has for many years made their 10/22 Carbine, plus a couple of more exotic non-carbine versions quite a few years ago. More recently they have come out with a much more rifle-like (as opposed to carbine-like) 10/22, and this year a very compact version of that one, too. It's shortened both in the stock and the barrel, and looks very handy and well proportioned in the ads I've seen for it. It's hard to beat any Ruger that's ever been made, and the 10/22 is about as prolific a .22 as has been made in decades. The newest compact 10/22 is a modern version of what used to be called a boy's rifle. About all you need to add is a light nylon sling and a couple of extra Ruger factory magazines.

I currently reside in NYC although I make frequent trips to the bush....Anything with a folding stock is considered an assault rifle in my location, and Living where I do I have a better chance of getting a date with Angelina Jolie than I do of getting a handgun permit.

Riley, it sounds like you're operating with much of the same handycaps as here in Maryland. Here we can get a handgun to go to the target range, but a permit to carry is like that date with Jolie, forget about it. And its illeagel to carry a handgun in the car. But they are more liberal with a long arm for some reason, especially if its a low profile long arm. This is why I've finally settled on my choice of camp guns. The uniformed guys don't seem to take a .22 rifle too high on the threat list. I see from your posts that in N.Y. it may be the same.

Examine carefully just what your camp gun is going to be used for. You allready have a shotgun, so why not go for something a little quieter and low key? Just for yuks, I put some standard velocity shorts through the little CZ scout, and I think popping open a bottle of Champain would be a little noisier. You could have a fresh rabbit on a spit without somebody 1/4 of a mile away being none the wiser.

I love a small .22 rifle. Years ago I had one of those AR-7's and got rid of it because it was unreliable. I got a Marlin papoose, and got rid of it for the same reason. Now with the scout I've found the perfect camp gun. Its small, light, quiet, exremely accurite, but most of all, non-threatning in appearence. Much as we may hate to consider that, in these days of post 9-11 hysteria and political correctness, we do indead have to consider such things.

Yeah the cz scout is looking like a nice deal, think I might try to dig me up one of them

I agree...you can special order one from walmart for 199.99 (If your wally world carries guns...not here in CA!) I just might get one myself for plinking. Does anyone know a good aftermarket source for CZ stocks, assesories, etc...?

I've shot a friend's Springfield M6 Scout & found it to be a good little gun, folds in half, holds a few extra rounds in the butt, the trigger takes a bit of getting used to to but it's not bad. Tried every type of round my friend had & had no issues at all, .22 or .410. Don't think they're made anymore so you'd have to look for something secondhand (or buy the even goofier looking new version). I'd consider buying one if I ever got around to applying for a gun license.

Here's an interesting article on the M6, http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/v-shrake/m6.html

Yeah I like the m6, but I 'm not big on buying discontinued guns, primarily because it could prove difficult to buy replacement parts for them, I'm currently looking at a cz scout or a henry youth lever action both are small the henry is 30 inc 0/a while the cz is 32 and both are ligt less than 5lbs I have no experience w/cz and my only henry experience is with the ar7, if a new m6 were to come out I might consider that as well

A detachable mag with more than 5 rounds is also not ok in NYC. Be sure to order your CZ scout with the 5 round mag - not the 10.

Im not overly worried about what .22 to take into the bush as they are all surprisingly reliable. The Indian kids in the far north regularly shoot the most abused, broken, bent, rusted POS that you wouldnt believe. Ive seen bolt actions with no sights, an old Mossberg semi with no clip that looked like it was buried in the mud for a year. Yet... these buggers still fire and kill small game regularly....Take whatever feels good on your shoulder, and that you can hit things with.

Thinking about pickin up a new camp gun, I'm looking at one of the Remington overunder comboguns in .22lr over .410 I figure this'll be great for plinking, small game, and the .410 at close range while not the best is definitely not bad as a self defense round with the right load. Any Thoughts??

Recalling Dick Cheney's hunting accident last year, the birdshot did not penetrate well. What the obvious result was, was that he was seriously injured, but not stopped which is necesary for self defense. When his life really came into jeopardy was after the shot had time to migrate and be problematic.

However, the Russians and Sellior and Bellot both make Buckshot (3 pieces of OOO buckshot) loads for the .410, and Remington, Winchester, the Russians, and possibly others make slug loads. Winchester even offers a 3" magnum slug now.

.410 with 6 shot (use 3" magnums) is a great small game load. Use a full choke if possible. I have shot various small game with .410's. It knowcks 'em dead, but there isn't so much shot that the meat is ruined.

It sounds like an interesting choice:cool: Baikal (IZHMASH) worksmanship is good- no doubt you'll get a high quality product.

Thanks my double barrel coach gun is baikal mad but imported by remington it's a woring mans gun for sure built to last.

A .22 Ruger Single Six is about all the camp gun I want here in Texas. I think the little lever action .22s (Marlin/Henry/Browning) are pretty neat and I own a folding stock 10/22. But to be really useful as a camp gun it needs to be handy IMO and there just isn't anything handier than a little .22 pistol that you can tuck in your waistband. If you're worried about snakes, load some snake shot. If you don't want it to be noisy and want to plink, load it with .22 shorts.

Just another possibility.

I beleive the M6 or something remarkably similar is being manufactured. I was looking at one recently (december) in a sporing goods store.

I think You should Give the papoose a good Look, It is plenty acurate, I have the newer stainless model and my brother has the older blued model, both are very reliable and acurate and lots of fun to shoot.

If what Akennedy said is true about NYC you may be better with the CZ though since marlins smalest magazine is a 7 rd.

I am curious though since in NJ bans like these only on semi autos, bolts are not restricted.

I saw an ad for them somewhere not so long ago. Back of a knife mag maybe. Just had a look around & can't find much but if you scroll right down to the bottom of this page http://www.lisc.net/p515.htm you'll see the newer M6. As I said earlier, it's kinda goofy looking. It's a pistol with detachable stock now by the way.

Camp gun choice? Depends where you are camping. My personal preference is a 22LR revolver such as a 4" Smith 617 or one of the discontinued Colts like the Diamondback.

A 357 Mag revolver like the 3" or 4" Ruger GP100 is hard to beat.

Another one to consider if you are not camping in big bear country is the Taurus 44-10. Cool revolver in 410 and 45 Colt. Limit your 410 shot to larger shot sizes like #4 or larger. Great camp defense gun and one heck of a snake gun.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. I am not big on the combo guns. A 22 rifle would be an excellent choice if you want a long gun. Choices menitioned earlier are just fine. Choice is yours.

Yeah I saw them at that sight I'm wondering if it is sold with a 16 inch barrel and a stock if it can marketed as a long gun because as I mentioned before getting a pistol permit by me is arduous to say the least....incidentally The sight you listed is actuially for the range whee I shoot....talk about irony

I didn't realize your were in New York City. Forget handguns; too much hassle to get the permit.

A good all around rifle is the Marlin 1894 in 357 mag. They are sold in 357, 41, and 44 mag versions. Pick one up. Really handy nice pointing rifle that is light. They are fun to shoot and you get just a bit more punch than a 22.

A Marlin 39A (22LR) would be a great camp rifle if you like lever actions. Browning makes are real sweet lever 22 also (BL-22, I believe). Other choices have been mentioned. Just depends on your budget.

Ditto the Marlin '94 as a general purpose backpack rifle. It's got round versatility, doesn't scare sheeple, accuracy, reliability, good balance, higher capacity and light weight.

Light .38 Special rounds could be used in a pinch to nab small game, and heavy loaded .357's will perform very similarly to the .30-30 out to around 150 yards (good for larger game or 2-legged nasties).
