Next Large Tactical Folder

Of the three you mentioned I don't own a 710. That said in the future that is one knife I really want. The Al Mar SERE 2000 I have is very nice with a very low riding clip and the action is slick. That knife flicks open smooth as butter. I also really like my Emerson SOCFK. You wouldn't go wrong with any of your choices.

If you have more to spend and don't mind hunting one down, try to find a cqc-12 from emerson.

+1.
Strider SmF is surprisingly nice as well. The stone-washed one is very cool.
Either one is tough enough to do anything "tactical" you might wish to do.

Ok... my BM Ruckus 610 just arrived this AM. It is also really nice.. I'll throw that on in there also.. in fact it is so big you may think about the Mini-Rukus.

Benchmade 630 Skirmish is a big titanium framelock. Disco'd but you can still find them.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The ZT line has never appealed to me even though they have a great reputation on this site, maybe it's because I've never handled one. I think I have narrowed my choice down to the 710 or an Emerson CQC-7 (I don't own a tanto yet). But then i got to thinking, I don't own a karambit either, or any Emerson model for that matter, so maybe I should kill two birds with one knife. Anybody that has experience with the Combat or Super karambit please chime in. I would love a size comparison. I have large hands, (well more fat really) and I have heard that the ring pommel is a tad small. Thanks again.

If the ZT's never appealed to you, they will appeal to you
even less when you handle one. They are way to bulky and heavy
for their blade lengths.

I'll say an Emerson because once I finally got one I kicked myself for not doing it sooner. They've got plenty of good sized folders to choose from so you can probably find one you like.

You shouldn't discount a ZT due to size and weight. They may be heavy, but they're also a tank. The way I see it, if you want a tank, get a ZT, but if you're looking for a feather weight slicing machine that can't handle any abuse, look elsewhere. The ZTs are big and aren't much of slicers, but it's nice knowing that it will handle whatever you throw at it.

MichaelScarn has the right idea. You can't go wrong with the Emerson "Wave", and the Commander is a great knife. I've got an Emerson Karambit with the "Wave" and they may cost, but you can't beat them for draw speed and deployment.

Forgot to mention.. check out the Kershaw Tyrade also.. it is a cross between a ZT and an Emerson. Big thick blade and liners like the ZT, but has G10 scales and thiner profile like the Emerson. It compares very well with my ZT200 but flatter in the pocket. It's probably the cheapest of every knife mentioned above also at around $80. There is also a full titanium version but the price jumps drastically.

Don't think that due to it's low price it is a cheaper knife. The composite blades were already made for the titanium Tyrade and were not used because the contrast of the steels did not meet specs. Everything else about the blade is right on the money. It was then just a matter of cutting the steel liners, making the G-10, and installing the Speed Safe. Of course I'm sure it is more than what I just said, but you get my meaning.:D

I'm gonna recommend a few that I have or have ever handled...

The BM Skirmish if you can get one... Even at the inflated aftermarket prices are worth the money and especially so if you want a safe queen. I've one already and one on the way but they are so good that I doubt I'd stop looking for more. The BM Rukus is another BM worth getting. I don't have one yet but I've handled one and though it is not disco'd it looks good enough to be a display piece.

On the Kershaw side of the equation... The JYDII Ti is worth a look. I can't own AOs so I can't comment on the Tyrade but I'm sure they're really good too.

For Spydercos, look at the Manix S90V CF. It has a BBL, something different from the other knives that you have. Only 400pcs were made but I'm sure they're still out there. The Sage 2 is another worthy contender... Titanium framelock. I'm a sucker for that.

One more vote for the zt mudd, haven't owned, but I've seen them in action and +1 in my book. Get one if you need a folding fixed blade

Lots of good knives mentioned but I think everyone should have an AXIS lock. The 710 is nice but I like others better. The rukus or mini rukus, the 14205 has a thicker blade than most Benchmades, and my favorite, the 950 Rift.

The skirmish and mini skirmish are big beefy folders if titanium framelocks are your thing.

I made a few video reviews on youtube for knives I think are good for you to check out:

In this one the Profili is really something else. And you see it compared to a ZT and a Military:
19. Three tactical knives: FKMD Profili, Zero Tolerance ZT200, Spyderco Military
A beast:
22. An awesome survival folder: Pohl Force Alpha One Outdoor
Don't understimate the Endura 4 G10:
25. Spyderco Endura 4 G10 and Byrd Cara Cara G10

and, not that large, but really awesome, and different, the Chokwe:
14. Two ethnic-inspired knives: Spyderco Chokwe and Citadel Khukri

I'd recommend a Strider SnG.
I've had nothing but good luck and high quality with the Strider knives I've purchased.

My Strider PT is my weekend EDC. Had it for >5 years and have not babied it at all, yet it still locks up solid as a vault and still takes and holds a super edge.

Regards,
Mike
