Having drank the PM2 koolaid and loving every minute of it, I'm faced with a dilemma - what to purchase next for my collection? I'm very tempted right now to, at the very least, buy another PM2 exactly as I have now (two is one, one is none, etc.). But beyond that, I feel like I'm really at a crossroads:

- I really love everything about the PM2, so I'm wondering if maybe I'd like to start collecting sprint runs.
- I'd like to maybe grab some other models (Gayle Bradley, Military, Caly 3.5, a Sage model, Manix2) but I'm concerned that they'd end up being safe queens.

What would you guys do? Obviously the sprint method is going to be the pricier option, but I feel like I'm hooked now on Spydies in general and just not sure what to do next. I'm not a heavy user (I'm a systems engineer), so this would be for "lighter" work or camping versus hard daily use. Any insight is appreciated!

I would go with the Sage 1/2/New 3. After carrying the PM2 for a while, I got tired of it and prefer my Sage 1. It carrys much more comfortable and I love that that wired clip.

Next to the Delica ZDP189"s the Para 2's are next in line and always will be ( think I will ask to have them sent with me to
the great beyond ) if they still do things like that.!!
Comes right down to it ~~ you just can't beat a Spydie {or Sal & Kristi} as far as Knives go & people go.*} GBTA
Enough said.^

I would (and do) purchase any Spydercos that appeal to me. And the ones that I am particularly fond of I buy one or two more of so that I have two or three of that specific model. That way I can keep one on me as a user , I keep one brand new and pristine in the safe and then have another one as a back up. This method of mine does not apply to every knife I buy. Just a certain few that find exceptional.

Agreed 100%, I'm running the blackout PM2 now, and I'm definitely going to get another for the safe so that I've always got a backup available on hand. I feel like it would be overkill to double up on every knife, but for the PM2, I definitely want (at least) one backup.

My local dealer is closed today, but I might head over tomorrow and see what Spydies they have in stock. I'm quite interested in trying out the RIL lock on the Sage 2 in particular! Thanks for the advice guys, I will post some pics when the new arrival(s) get here. On another note, are the sprints being planned for 2014 ever announced anywhere? Or does one simply need to keep an eye on the forums here and/or over at Spydercoo for announcements?

I love my sage 2. Many say it rivals the small sebenza, at 1/4th the price. The F&F on Taichung spydies are amazing too.

Sage 2 is nice, but not close to sebenza.

Spyderco makes so many knives it's hard to make a purchase without thinking you forgot something..

I'm looking at caly 3 or paramilitary.

You mean you don't have a Military yet :confused::p

Best knife on the market for the price IMO.
Some are put of by its size, but it carries much better than one would think if they haven't carried one.
I normally don't care for large folders, but the Military is the one exception.
The CF BG-42 I carry weights 4oz, and offers many grip options.
No other knife on the market gives you a 4" full flat ground demon slicing blade at only 4.25oz(on standard model, 4oz on the CF).

The Military, Para2, and the Sage 1 are three must haves for me, and all real bargins IMO.

My next purchase is a new Manix2 with black G10 handle and ffg S30V blade. Hope they are available soon.

Why would any regular production model be a safe queen? Especially something like a Military or Manix 2... I mean, come on. They are tools, and tools are useless if you don't use them. You don't have to skin a deer or baton firewood with it, but not carrying it because you don't want to mess it up opening letters, cutting cardboard and slicing apples is just funny to me. You will appreciate and enjoy the knife 1000% more actually putting it into action than leaving it in a drawer somewhere. If you don't use it, then you don't have to sharpen it and sharpening is half the fun. It's all about appreciating the quality of the steel and the way the knife works in your hand. I can understand babying an $800 custom or something, but even then I think it's a bit silly. The edge begs to be used. Every time you open a knife and look at that edge, you know that is it's one job and it wants to do it's job well.

Use it, clean it, sharpen it, appreciate it.

To answer your question though, I ended up going with a Southard after my PM2 after a lot of research. I think I'll be going for a Dragonfly next to change things up and get a smaller EDC.

Personally, I love the PM2 and would like to get some sprint runs as well but the secondary market prices for past sprints is ridiculous. So I'll wait for future sprints and get in on the ground floor with those. Sal has spoken about a fluted carbon fiber PM2 that is in the works for the future sometime, so I'm quite excited for that. They haven't done a M4 PM2 yet either and that is a steel I'm really interested in trying.

Sorry, "safe queen" was probably the improper terminology (I blame the hydrocet cough syrup and posting at 1am on that, lol). To be more specific, it's not that I wouldn't use them, I just don't know that I'd use them ENOUGH. It'd be more to check-the-box-off-on-the-collection-sheet I guess? I don't know a better way to describe it than that, but reading it in my own broken wording now seems rather silly.

I do agree though that the previous PM2 sprint aftermarket is fairly insane. Right now the PM2 CTS-204P is near $300 on the Bay, and even the S35V models are going for around $200ish.

I have a Manix2 that has been really great for me. I could definitely recommend one.

Gayle Bradley for sure. If you want a knife you never need to worry about damaging but don't necessarily want a ZT pocket anchor, that's your knife. Outside of my SnG, ZTs, and Hogue EX-02s (all considerably heavier and/or bulkier), the Gayle Bradley inspires the most confidence as a user knife out of any I own. It's my take-it-to-work-without-scaring-people hard-use knife.

For lighter use:
Yojimbo
Military
Sage
Chapparral
Caly 3.5
Domino
Hungarian
Dragonfly
Cricket

My next Spyderco purchase just may be the new Spyderco Hungarian Folder. I really like the way it looks in the pictures and I like the bigger blades. The Schempp Tuff is on the short list too. I've been very happy with all my Taichung made knives.

Why wouldn't a regular production knife be a safe queen ? If I like the knife THAT much then I will definitely buy another one to keep in the safe and maybe even another as a back up. Like I mentioned before , one for a user , one in the safe and one as a back up. That's the way I like to do it with my favorite knives.

To each his own , Synch.
