So a little background, one of my first nice knives was a FRN spyderedge cricket, many years ago. I lost it and forgot about Spyderco for awhile but I am back. In the last year or so I've bought the following: Atlantic Salt, UKPK, T-Mag, Para-Millie and Lava, while my old Cricket has gone to my little brother to try and jumpstart his collection. But I digress.

The Spyderco monkey is on my back again and he needs his fix. I was going to go for the Caly 3 and still might but wanted to come to you guys to evaluate my options. The use will be EDC and general purpose use, max. length 3" but besides that run wild, I have no real preference for handle material or locking mechanism.

As a final note, I was looking at the Viele Collabs. ... the Phoenix and the Viele II... any specific feedback on these models would be welcome as well (I've heard about the QC issues with Phoenix)

Thanks in Advance

If you search here and the spyderco forums people had posted having problems with the Phoenix showing up with surface scratches, sharpened edges and sticky ball locks.. again this is just what I have read.

I had a Phoenix with a sticky ball lock. I sent it back to spyderco and they sent me a new one that is silky smooth. I was off a little on the knife, now I can't put it down. I am sure they have corrected the problem or will stand by the knife if you manage to get one with an issue. Great warranty from a great company!

I would go one more inch and get a Plain Edge Mini Manix, after that you will be hard pressed to find another favorite knife..

The ZDP-189 Caly 3 is one of my all time favorites. If you don't have a UKPK or Caly 3 yet then they come highly recommended.

I was thinking the same... I know the Caly 3's reputation but was looking to maybe branch out more as I already own the UKPK. Any thoughts, suggestions?

How bout a Sage? You can get the liner lock CF version now or wait until summer for the Ti framelock version.

There is hardly a better 3" blade from Spyderco than the Caly III. Try also Native IV just released in carbon fibre and with the FFG. The Phoenix is definitely a sexy looking beast, but not one for those who couldn't bear scratches on handles etc...

Daniel,
I am shocked that you didn't mentioned 75mm Persian.
Except this I agree with Dan: Caly3  and Native4  are on the top of my list of 3" folders (and 75mm Persian  as well).

Highly recommend the Phoenix. It's an awesome knife. Also becoming very partial to my P'kal. I'm not a huge hawk fan like some Spydie lovers but the P'kal makes a great EDC beyond it's SD skills.

I want a Pheonix.:)
And yes, the P'kal IS a great knife, which can do more than some think.
It was my first Golden knife(LOVE the way the "Golden, Colorado USA Earth" address contours along the line of the handle:thumbup:).

Well, the CF Caly III is pretty awesome, but its very similar in feel and looks to your UKPK. On the other hand, it is could be viewed as a vastly superior version of the UKPK (anyone know which came first?)

If your looking to branch out, I really love my SE Delica wave. Very addicting, and it comes with a shallow SE pattern that slices much more smoothly than most. This SE pattern is only featured on the Wave series.

The Khurkuri also looks superb, but is over 3".
