Niagara Specialty Metals - cool visit to where a lot of steel comes from!

Hi jdm61,
We hot roll the billets from 5 inches to 1/2 inch at about 2100F. This can take anywhere from 7 to 14 passes depending on the grade. It then gets fully annealed, and rolled to the final thickness. The final rolling temperature is between 1450F and 1900F, depending on the grade. It gets fully annealed after this hot rolling too. The anneal process can take 3 to 6 days depending on how much material is in the furnace. A grade like CPM S30V has an annealed hardness of about Rc 25. No idea what the hardness is after it cools from hot rolling. All I can say is that you need to handle it like glass because it can break if you handle it too roughly.

Hi Augus7us,
Those slabs weigh about 1,700 pounds. We typically yield about 1,200 pounds of sheet from that slab. The thickness of the final sheet dictates how many square feet you'll get.
