***UPDATE*** We have our 3 Rotor settings AND I just heard back from Charlie!! I'm excited to figure this out.

***UPDATE***Keep your eyes on Post #211. That's where I'm updating the settings.

I'm overdue for a giveaway as a thank you for all the warm friendships and knowledge that I've obtained here at BFC.

What: I'm giving away a NIB Abalone Wharncliffe #77 Barlow. For me it's a grail knife, and was one of Mike Latham's SFOs. It has two blades, a Clip and Wharncliffe. I've only wiped off the oil for the pics below and oiled the joints in Charlie's honor. It is perfect as far as I can tell with centered blades, a smooth and "just right" pull, and is even more beautiful than photographs suggest. I love it: a very well built and hafted knife by GEC.

Who: Anyone who has posted content in Traditionals before now is eligible. I'll ship anywhere in the world. Tell me how to ship to your neck of the woods and I'll do my best to get it there. I'm closing entries at midnight on Sunday, March 22, Eastern Daylight Time.

How: To enter, just put two letters of the English alphabet at the top of your post. Like "NQ" or "TL". Easy peasy. I want to support BFC, so if you are Gold or above you are entitled to another post with another two letters. Whoever gets closest to the winning letters, but without going over, wins the Barlow.

How I'm going to decide the winner
: This is where it gets fun and the title of this post--four sets of three letters--hints at the method. I'm going to use a virtual version of the German Enigma Machine. I never really understood how the Machine worked until seeing web schematics at Wiki and the below site:

http://enigmaco.de/enigma/enigma.html

As a child I loved codes. I learned the Pigpen cipher used in the Civil War, and studied simple books on substitution codes from my public library. I would have loved a Little Orphan Annie Secret Society Decoder ring if such a thing would have existed--but I loved seeing it in "A Christmas Story". "The Imitation Game" captured my imagination, so I wanted to have a GAW based on the Enigma Machine. After entries are closed, our own Charlie C. (Santo Carlos) will give me two random letters of the alphabet. Then 3 esteemed BFC members will give me 1 random alphabet letter to which I will set the 3 rotors. With the rotors set, I will run Charlie's letters through and the winning letters will be generated by the Enigma Machine. Closest guess without going over wins.

The Enigma Machine was invented by Germans, so Andi (Humppa) will choose the letter that sets rotor 1. Three Polish mathematicians broke an early version of the Enigma Machine, so Ted (T. Erdelyi) who had a Hungarian grandfather with a Polish knife will choose the letter that sets rotor 2 (I know that's a stretch, but it's the closest I could get to Poland :) ). Alan Turing from the UK invented the reprogrammable machine that broke the Enigma Machine code, so Jack Black will represent the UK and choose the letter that sets rotor 3.

Need I say more? I'll let pics do the talking.
