Nice and inexpensive

If I was told get the best I could get for $100, I'd get a Buck Alaskan Guide 110 in s30v, DLT exclusive 20cv drop point Buck 110, or USA made blade exclusive m390 Kershaw knockout.

If I had $75 or so, I'd look for a dealer that still had a Spyderco Pacific Salt in stock.

For $50 I'd get a run of the mill not on sale Buck 110 (and still have money for shipping). On sale around Father's Day or black Friday till around Christmas they are about $35. No better deal in my opinion. USA made, good steel (for the price and depending on your uses), real ebony handles, and one of the best warranties in the business.

If I had $30 or less, Buck 110 or 112 slim select. Excellent knives for about the price of a take out pizza. Got some on black Friday discount this year for about $18-$21. If I couldn't afford that I'd just save up till I could. :p

Rat 2 in D2, still amazed every time I open it. Crazy action, thin , light holds a good edge and cheap. Also the Kershaw shuffle 2 , had one and lost it,as a matter of fact once I post this I'm gonna find one and buy it.

My favorite “cheap” knife is the Spyderco UK Penknife. $58, made in USA, thin, light, and solid.

I also like the Buck 112, as was mentioned above.

I try to avoid knives from the PRC these days, regardless of brand. However I once had a CRKT Drifter ($20) that was a surprisingly good little knife once I took it apart and tuned it.

Mora Companion, BK14, Victorinox Alox models, several models of Manly knives

AMAZING value in these guys!!

RAT 1 or 2 is one of the best values in knives. Buck 110 is fine if that's your thing. The Kershaw filter is a solid knife at 15 bucks.

Though my personal recommendation is anything from Civivi. Or a leatherman.

To me that means under $50

Boker has alot of traditionals under that mark. Buck 110 and 112 in traditional, LT, and slim configurations. Victorinox, Opinel, Svord, Mora. Some Kershaws and a few Spydercos fit that bill. Along the Ontario RAT 1 and 2.
I got s Svord Mini Peasant that I want to try, but cannot get over the rough grind and the stiffness of the pivot screw, which I can adjust but I am not good at sharpening.

Get a work sharp belt sharpener (the regular one works great) to be able to put an awesome lazer sharp, convex bevel on just about any blade.

A 20° convex edge, done on all 3 supplied belts is super sharp and the edge stays sharp a lot longer than a normal V-edge.

Well worth the $

Inexpensive is definitely relative. For me, a modern folder under $150 is inexpensive. My least expensive modern:

However, I also have 2 case traditional folders and a Vic super tinker, which I consider inexpensive. Most of my collection is over $150 (in today's dollars), either cost new or due to mods.

I have a lot of Bucks. A lot! 110's in 20cv, s30v, s35vn, and the 420. Special order, bucklites, slims you name it. Great brand at good prices.
And the worksharp. Yep. With the leather honing belt.

Take a look at the Steel Will Knives. I'm kind of a fan of D2 steel. For me it seems like an easy steel to get screaming sharp, and holds and edge pretty well. I have a Cutjack Mini in D2 steel that I use regularly as my work knife. They are nothing fancy, just user knives. Just FRN scales and a flipper. But IMO they have a good pocket clip, good steel and a decent flipper action. I'm not a huge flipper fan, preferring thumb studs. So I may look at a different model soon. $40 gets you a Mini Cutjack.

How ironic! Thanks to everyone, I now have a big list of cool knives on my radar. Definately more than $200 worth. And since I am off work until the 2nd, I have time too research the ones I haven't even got to yet. I consider looking as part of the fun of the hobby. And also variety in the collection. So really, thanks for your input. And Happy New Year to everyone.

Happy New Year to you too. It doesn't matter if we're talking cars, watches, or knives. Window shopping and cruising reviews is part of the fun.

Quick warning about the kershaw filter (also the manifold & starter & decoy) - they all use 3cr13 - yes, 0.3% carbon - it's absolute junk which is primarily used in the worst knives these days (like schrade, gerber etc)

Just skip anything with 3cr13 unless you really want to practice sharpening a lot

If you can buy over the counter, give Case a try. A lot of patterns, a lot of colours and scales options, price generally under 100 $. I would definitely call them nice.

I have a Steel Will Intrigue, 3 3/4" blade. Good knife, D2, flipper, takes and holds an edge, full flat grind, thin edge, no lock rock, centered blade ~$45.

Definitely a knife you should buy in person, I've had some bad experiences buying online
