Nice day for a hike...

Last night a cold front came through so I figured I head out today and enjoy the cooler temperatures. I went to the same spot I usually go but went in a different way; I parked further down the road and headed into woods in the low spot down near the stream. It’s kind of like a marsh down there and with the rains from last night is was a muddy mess. I did my best to stay out of the mud… and for the most part I did. I cut my hike a little shorter then I would have liked to because the mosquitoes were chewing the hell out of me. I don’t know if I missed a bunch of spots when putting on repellant or if they just didn’t care I was wearing it (20% picaridin), but they wouldn’t leave me alone. Oh well, still had a good time:thumbup:

Anyways, here’s where I entered the trail from the road

A hike wouldn’t be complete without seeing at least one deer

I like to carry horizontally across my back because I usually can’t stand a knife bouncing on my leg all day. I find it also draws a lot less attention (people rarely look at your back unless their following you). So it’s a win-win for me… anyone else prefer this style of carry?

That is some really lush foliage, I'd love to hike there. I like your horizontal back carry too. If the knife is long enough to bang on my leg as I walk, it won't stay there long.

Those S&W fixed blades are a tremendous value. Solid knife. Its nice to see someone who apriciates that......Usually you see just people carryin the high end stuff(im guilty). We forget that you can really accomplish the same things w/ less exspensive tools...

Where in MD are ya? I'm in NoVa and I recently hiked out near a trail in Linden, Va. that looked very similar...

Awsome pictures, what great area to be in. And yeah I carry my fixed blades the same way,

Thanks for the kind words guys:thumbup:

J W- they really are a great value, I did a review a little while back and posted it here but can’t seem to find it now…

Jeepnut- I’m in abouts central MD, it was a section of Patapsco State Park that I hiked at today.

I think I remember that review man.... You did some batoning and such with it didnt you? Overall a great user blade, and a great way to spend the day!

looks like a nice hike...shame about the bugs...

i don't carry horizontal, but have been thinking about it for some time. i mostly carry lower-dollar knives that come in bad sheaths (ei the mora) that do not work well for horizontal carry. i also sometimes worry about retention even with a well done leather sheath...i might have to see if i can have one of the kydex guys make me up a nice rig...

This kind of greenery is always a treat for us desert rats. Thanks for the hike. :)

You’re quite welcome:thumbup:

That knife is by no means a high dollar knife ($25 to my door from Smokey’s). I added some para-cord to the sheath to create a few more belt loops so the sheath wouldn’t move around as much while walk/jogging/running; it’s worked out pretty well. I’d really like to get a kydex sheath done up for my Mora Clipper (horizontal carry); it’d instantly be my favorite (already love the knife just hate the sheath). I was actually trying to think of a way to mod the crappy sheath it the clipper came with to make it hold the knife better (kind of snap in and out) and able to carry horizontally (probably something done up with paracord), but it’d probably be easier to just buy a kydex one:D

With any sheath being carried horizontally, retention is key. I only carry sheaths that have either a strap or snap of some sort holding the blade in. the last thing I need is for my knife to fall out and me walk off with no idea:eek:

Great pics bro that looks a real nice area to hike. You did well spotting the deer, they can be real hard to spot sometimes !!!
I also carry my knives horizontally either on my belt or on my waist pack, whenever I get a Kydex sheath I ask for a tec-lok to be fitted and the first thing I do is turn it 90 degrees !!!

Thanks…The more I carry horizontally the more I like it:thumbup::D

Looks nice---but bet that's tick city this time of year.

Sure is… I use repellent and make sure to periodically check my leg and arms while I’m moving along down the trail:thumbup:
