Nice day for an Adirondack hike

It was a sunny, warm day here in the Southeast corner of the Adirondack Park in upstate NY. I got out for a nice long hike (nine miles) in the snow. I'm going to sleep very well tonight. :D

Winter is finally losing its grip and the snow is melting...

While at Fishbrook Pond taking this photo, I heard a Raven croaking overhead. I looked up and was surprised to see the Raven harassing a bald eagle. They were thermaling or slope soaring as I watched and were getting W-A-Y up high. I could see them pretty well with my 10x binocs, so I tried to get a shot of them with my little camera, hoping I could crop a bunch of the 10MP photo and end up with something viewable. I wasn't able to get them at all. I couldn't even find them in the view screen. I think I may have needed to use the manual focus mode set to infinity, but they were getting too high and far away, so I gave up.

I forgot to take knife and gear photos!

I used my Maxpedition Falcon II pack with a Blackhawk 3 liter hydration reservoir. I carried my Busse SAR 5 on my belt and a Vic Farmer in my pocket.

I started off the hike with my snowshoes strapped on my pack, but quickly returned to the truck to leave them behind. Luckily, I did fine without them and only broke through the very tough crust on the snow a few times. I hiked a couple of miles each way on sections of trail where snowmobiles had packed down the snow and walking was fairly easy. (Unfortunately, this area of state land is open to snowmobiling. But the terrain is pretty rugged so the snowmobiles most always end up single track on the narrow, marked snowmobile trails, which sometimes coincide with the hiking trails.)

Think Spring!

I'm glad you like the photos. The hike was along the ridge of mountains on the east side of Lake George; my favorite place in the world (so far!).

Here's a shot from the same vantage point, except taken in mid-January:

Looks like it was a beautiful day desmo, thanks for sharing  Love the shot of the little outflow creek and the shots of Lake George :)

Beautiful pictures. Snow won't be around much longer, though, so enjoy it while you can.

what a great spot man, looks alot like Nova Scotia, expecially arount the paradise lake area outside of Bridetown.

Gotta love the Adirondacks. I used to know someone who had a cabin on Lake George.

When I was growing up we did the annual family camping at Eighth Lake, and our scout troop would do canoeing trips on the Fulton Chain (in at Old Forge, out near Tupper Lake) and backpacking trips around Marcy/Lake Colden.
