Had a Skills day yesterday, It was alot of fun..Drove about 70 miles east to the far end of longisland where my friend has a relatively secluded house..We got together with 4 other gents, (guys who we all camp with) for our first of many skill sessions..We focused mostly on fabricating and using bowdrills from different types of wood. It was a blast. Everyon got at least a fair amount of smoke while only a few of us got coals. Than we barbqued up a few burgers, and spent the rest of the afternoon making beercan alch stoves.. Great way to spend a wednesday overall.

Saw a large variety of tools there and got to play with a spec plus bowie an RTAK, and a rat3..I used my everpopular tramotina/mora clipper combo..It worked great as always.. I did find however that when drilling in hard wood the thin edge of the moras tip did suffer sime damage..(nothing a little stone time wont fix) I might get a higher end scandi down the road,,,maybe an aito Puukko or a helle symfoni.

Any way we decided we're going to meet monthly for skills practice, and quaterly for trips.. I'm hoping that this will be an informative, encouraging, and fun process..Now we'll see if everyone sticks to it.

Sounds like you had a blast!
Just my 2 cents but while I like my Clipper the Mora Triflex Craftsman is a tad thicker and seems a lot sturdier to me.
And its only a little more expensive than the Clipper.
I do like the ergonomics of the Clipper better though.

Off-topic but ...
Oh cr*p, we are just now having our first snow of the season, big grape- sized snowflakes.
Time to put on some extra body fat ummm er "insulation" and go to the batcave for the winter!
:D

Monthly skills practice is an excellent idea RR

We all pride ourselves with having the latest and the greatest gear
but what good is it if you don't put it to the test ..... practice time
is essential to honing ones skills or lack thereof.

Firesteels & PCB's are great but last for just so long ... now if you are able get a coal or better yet an actual fire going with a bowdrill .... what's the saying give a man a fish and he can eat for a day teach him how to fish ...

good stuff !

My sentiments exactly, and thanks for the warm words.. I try to get out and practice even a little bit at least once a week, but I think involving other people will help me in staying more motivated and.
