Well, it was an absolutely gorgeous day here in NY, and I had nothing to do for once, so I decided to go on a nice long day hike for the first time in wayyy too long. Started off hiking around 8:30 this morning, got back in the car around 4:30 this afternoon... covered about 18 miles I think. All by my lonesome... sometimes thats the best way!

First, some new springtime growth...

Found some remains... deer bones. No gnaw marks, so not sure what happened. This definitely isn't where the deer dropped - all I found were a couple of leg bones...

Pulled up root system could make for a nice shelter in a pinch... pack is for size reference - it was a big one!

More to come...

There were some sheeple around, so I went back country for most of the day. Map and compass, can't beat em.

Decided to put my new LMF firesteel to the test.

Some charcloth, two strikes, and about ten seconds of puffing later...

I heard this little lady coming so I froze in my tracks, and I'll be darned if she didn't cross my intended path about 10 feet in front of me.

Then, about 10 minutes later, I spotted this guy. Can you find him? Hint: he doesn't give a hoot!

I tried to get closer for a better pic, but I spooked him... Was lucky enough to catch this shot...

More wildlife... of the termite variety.

More still...

Found some of these in a clearing. Don't know what they are, but the tops are fluffy and very dry. I grabbed a few to see if they would catch a spark, and boy did they! Two strikes with the ferro rod and not only did it catch the spark, but it flamed for a good 20 seconds!! Sorry, no pics. I was too surprised to react!

And finally, a little knife porn. Enzo Trapper and a very mutilated fuzz stick...

Great day... I really need to try and get out for this more often...

Sometimes those solo excursions are the best.
Very nice pics ... where were you hiking ?

Great pics... I'm upstate and you are correct the weather was great today... Looks like you had a great time...

Wow, looks like a great time, and quite productive for wildlife. Great shots, thanks for sharing!

Harriman's a great place ... we need to round up the members here in the tri-state area and have our own bushbash.

I'd be down... unfortunately, I'm heading to PA next week until probably November for work. Though, I'm still only a couple of hours away...

Great pictures.

Found some stuff pretty similar to the fluffy grass heads you've got pictured. Took right off when sparked with a firesteel, and burned pretty good:

Looks like the same stuff, and thats exactly what mine did. The stalks on mine were about 3'-5' tall, and they grew very near each other in little patches of about 15-20 plants.

Thanks for sharing. Those pics of the deer are really nice. Special moments those.
Nice photo angles. Always interesting to see how somebody else sees the land. You've a really good eye for a picture.

Thank you, I appreciate that a lot. I have very little experience with a camera, actually. In fact, I was using a friend's today - I don't even have one myself! When I have the money (and don't spend it immediately on knives), I'll be buying myself a Digital Rebel or something similar. I enjoyed taking those today.

And just in case any of you were having trouble...
