Friend from work said, "I cut down this tree last weekend and it had one of those "burls" on it. Do you want it?" I asked him what it was and he said he wasn't sure, so I came home today and it was sitting on my front steps.

Think there might be some nice scales hidden in there.....

And yes I know I need to mow my yard. :p

Looks sweet Larry! What is it? Will you let is sit for x number of years before doing anything with it? Or....?

Looks like a Cherry burl to me. Nice one should be some nice figure in there. I have worked with a few of them. -Burton

Yep
Cherry burl....cracks before your eyes. One of the worst for that, but beautiful when done up right like Burton's last blade...

I will just put this one away and let it sit. OK Im gonna paint the ends first!!!!!!!!

Good score. It doesn't take long for the word to get out, then you never know who will be showing up with cool wood for you. Congratulations.

Trim back all those end splits before sealing the ends or it will do no good. Does look like cherry, but not much burl in it if any. Looks more like a scar heal.

Yeah it was a fairly young tree that was taken down in the storm, but as far as cherry goes, all of the ones I have cut up from the midwest, specifically MN, MI and WI have had that same type of shape with the ball not protruding very far out from the trunk. A lot of them actually encompass the entire trunk, so you get more of a mixed grain. We'll see what its like when I cut into it. My first inclination wasnt to seal the ends since there was so much trunk left on it, like many of the other burls I have processed, but thanks for the tip, that makes sense.

I just thought it was cool to come home to see a burl sittin there on the steps that I wasn't expecting, and didn't harvest myself. Larry theres gotta be a few blocks in there worth at least $100 each !!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

hahahahahaha..absolutely...if it's super extra hard and not your normal cherry burl :)

If you have a band saw, best method is to rip that round down the pith line which will relieve all the heart pith tension as it dries..well..most of it anyway.

I will keep that in mind....thanks again for the info. I been using my new bandsaw for a few months now. Its a Rikon 14, and I gotta say I love it. Got some timberwolf blades from Suffolk Machinery and it does anything I need. Hardly use my table saw anymore........The thing that swayed me on this machine was the 13" resaw capablility with no riser blocks needed, and the 1.5hp TEFC motor so Im happy. My shop space is kind of limited so I didn't wanna go any bigger.

Thanks Larry
