Does anyone know of a source of nickle iron meteorite slices about 1" X 1 1/2" X 1/4" to use as bolsters?

George, I think K&G in Az. might sell some meteorite. I though that I saw some in one of their catalogs. You might give them a call, I wish you luck. Are you going to tell us what you are bulding and need that stuff for. Or am I going to have to torchure you with more of my misspelling, hahahaaa.

I am looking at doing a small tanto style with meteorite bolsters and mamoth ivory scales.

The juxtaposition of space and time appeals to an old sci fi buff like myself.

This looks like it is going to be one very expensive puppy though, I want to use blue or blue green bark on it.

Do a serch on the net for the meteroite
I found a person a few years back that had slabs of the stuff. One hint heat treat it after shaping it to get a better pattern..
It makes it much darker..with brighter stripes

George, It sounds like it is going to be a real beaut. Maybe when you finish it you will post some picks for all of us knife nuts.

George, souns like what ouy are looking for is Gibeon meteorite, the stuff that looks like crystal formation when its etched??

I found some at www.meteorite.com, I cant remember the guys name that I delt with but ask if they have any "gibeon" already slabbed up.

Just a word of caution... Its expensive so be in good health when you contact anybody about it...

Alan Folts..

PS I also thought of using the silicon rock meteorite formations for a handle material, it has some cool colors and paterns too, imagine, you could make an entire knife of things not from this earth.. gives me the shivers...

I have some tiny bits now that I picked up at a gem and mineral show that are destined for a couple of small (3" blade) drop points and the sticker shock really is something.

The cost of the mastadon however may delay the project a little, probably until just before the fall knife show up here, October 24th.

Darryl's information on heat treating the bolsters to bring out the pattern is interesting I was just going to etch it like damascus.

Anybody tried etching meteorite?

George, I etched it with ferric Chloride, just like damascus....

As far as the wastadon ivory what kinda peice are ya looking for, all bark peice or just something nice creamy center cut??

Alan...

Alan If the customer that I have in mind for the piece doesn't make up his mind, he is suffering from sticker shock right now, I will probably go with whatever I can find with a little bit of bark on it. The only material commonly available locally is a caramel coloured variety and I think it would not be dramatic enough. The big guys like wolfegang Loerchner and Brian Tighe buy up all of the really good stuff as soon as it appears.

I figure if the customer backs out I will try to schdule the project for the fall. In the meantime I will go ahead with the tiny pieces of meteorite that I have now and make up a couple of small drop points with buffalo horn handles so I can scrim them.
