I have some Nielson plates I am beginning to use on my grinder to good effect. My problem is I like to use some water base lubes when grinding and it is getting behind the paper at the edges and causing the plates to rust as well as loosening the paper at those locations.
I'm wondering about Parkerizing them or using something like Brownells Gun Kote to make the more water resistant.
What do you guys think?

Golfer, I change paper on my Neilson discs almost every five minutes. Use some 4XXX steel wool and clean your discs. Then change your paper more often. They don't need coatings. just keep them dry. This is only my opinion. Larry

Thanks Larry, do you use any lubes or grind dry?
Best wishes.
Golfer. I like to use a spray bottle with a mixture of "Kool Tool" and water of just a spray bottle of water. Some knife makers use WD-40 and some use a disc stick lube but I have not used these things. If my opinion counts for anything I like to use a moist spray before sanding steel and water seems to work just fine but be advised that your paper will suffer a little by the water. I use so much paper because I change it every few minutes when working. Nothing works as well as fresh paper. I just tonight ordered 100 sheets of Rhynowet red paper from Tru Grit in 150 grit which is my start out grit for wood and metal. Keep reading Blade Forums...others have opinions that may differ. Good luck, Larry

LarryZ. Did you build that work rest or is there somewhere I can procure one? I was looking at the ones on TruGrit but feel that the work rest supports will get in the way for freehand grinding. I would really like to get a Neilson disc sander but will want a work rest with it as well. Thanks in advance!
