HI Guys busy Saturday it's been
this is not meant to be pretty but as a tool..designed by them and tweaked by me :)
this is a prototype for a Survival school here in Maine it will be tested next week in action,
1095, with Canvas Micarta handle..
The center hole is for bow and stick fire starting holder, the butt end protrudes for hammering on,,
in the production model the handle through the tang and into the Micarta will have a space
to hold fish line and hooks and maybe some matches

I cut the saw teeth like a chain saw would be in this one, with a set
(each tooth is canted out cleaning the side of the blade)
in each tooth so it will have less binding then others you see.. this will saw cut much better than most any other knife will
I'll wrap the handle with Para cord also for use if ever needed...
I differential tempered this knife, the edge and teeth will be harder than
the center of the knife, the center will be more like a spring.
while the edge will be better edge holding..the saw teeth can be sharpened
like a chain saw chain with a 5/16" file.
thanks for looking.. forgive the bad picture:o
tests are done now,, by School

geez Dan you're stuff is gonna be on every hiker camper and armed forces guy out there.

looks pretty damn nice. nice feature to be able to sharpen those teeth just like a chainsaw too

That is one very cool knife! Versatile and tough and still looking nice. I just learned how to cut triangle saw teeth for tang hole saws. The chainsaw teeth is a great idea, they look like they will actually cut and not just be decoration.

What do you mean it is'nt supposed to be pretty. Any well designed and useful tool is pretty.

thanks guys :o
I'm not sure about winning any awards but it should do what it was intended for..we'll see :)

like on a hand saw?
those are called Scratcher teeth..in this neck of the woods.. :)

Dan, did you consider removable grip scales so it could be easily lashed to a pole as a lance. Not necessarily for throwing, but as a stabbing instrument when one does not wish to, or cannot get close to an objective? A little distance is sometimes helpful.

HI Wick,
these are removable ..
the bolts used, are the hiding bolt type fasteners that you grind off flush , I just made the slots deeper on the ones on the other side, (the side that has the alignment tube. )
the ones on the side shown are glued in place,
they did ask for replaceable grips, it's also one of the reasons for the removable parcord wrap I will do to it (not shown:) )

I am clear across the continent from you and that is all they do here to. The ones I have used are so worthless that in most cases I could chew through the limb faster with my teeth.

The chainsaw teeth idea is great! What type of bar oil works best on them?:D

veggie oil, it's safer for plant life

kill a plant to save a plant  ;) :D

I've spent a lot of time looking at the thing Dan...and to be honest, I'm impressed. I don't really like survival knives because they don't do anything very well. I do like survival tools though.

The pronounced coke bottle handle is perfect for a knife that will be used on both edges. Size seems right and the spear point is again, very appropriate for the knife.

All knives can be used as a weapon but the ones that are designed for fighting, are rarely good for much else. This one is tool first, weapon as a last resort.

Saw backs aren't my thing but using a chainsaw pattern is a stroke of genius. The only thing I've ever found the saws are useful for was cutting notches for snares, dead falls and traps. The chainsaw design should be nearly perfect for that and do some heavier chores as well.

Nice job....Remember us when you put those stupid Becks out of business once and for all.

That looks great!! That’s the kind of knife that puts hairs on your chest when you carry it.

Don
I'm not sure about stopping the beck tracker in it's tracks yet :D
The outfit that wants this
wanted the cuter to just make notches but I thought why stop there..I'd had the idea rolling around in this empty head for some time and thought I'd better do it now...before someone else does it:)
you don't know all the ideas
I've waited to long on just to have it come out later by someone else,
the drop point was to be up higher per the customers drawing but he wanted more strength at the tip so I dropped it some and left off the swage I'd normally put there..I threw a bunch of ideas at him and he liked them..and I'm glad he was open to Ideas..

the saw teach will be a surprise to him though:D I have the handle cord wrapped now with 10' of cord, that should come in handy if needed ...
if he cuts his leg off with it he can use it for a tourniquet:D

RedE
the blade is just 5/32" I did this for a reason, being a prototype I went light on it test my ability with the heat-treat.
this guy broke a Dave Beck tracker
so of course I'm compelled to make it lighter and hopefully to better his..
don't you love it when marks are set to better them ;)

thanks Guys..:)

When hunting I carry a Gerber folding saw .This style is no longer made but it has 'chain saw' teeth and over the years I've found it very effective for both wood and bone .The saw only cuts on the back stroke ,perhaps that's why it's no longer made, but it works so well that I never even tried another type.
