A carpenter's pencil is rectangular and can only be sharpened with a knife. Both that and a standard pencil can easily be sharpened with a knife !!! A sharp knife beats a gadget any day !!

Hey Mete...

I agree with you that you can't beat a knife..
However a pencil sharpener is kind of a neat little trick..

That sharpener in the link actually does sharpen contractor pencils, the rectangular ones...

Yeah, a carpenter's pencil can only be sharpened with a knife... OR a Carpenter's Pencil Sharpener, as the original link shows.

I been carry one for a whill now. But i got the regular sharpener the one that is made from metal.. I find it works great very easy to light too. When walking i would pick up a stick or two and put them in the pocket. Then use them to make a fire. I have also found that if i find a wet stick i can always put it close to the skin to dry it. After a few hours it would be dry. Its even better then then cotton balls, in a way.

Yes, it sharpens a carpenter's pencil. It just does it badly. Brings the pencil to a point. That negates the advantage of the rectangular lead when you're marking timbers or plywood.

I've used a pencil sharpener for fire starting. But only a knife works to sharepen a carpenter's pencil.

I posted this link because I thought is was a fast & easy way to get dry tinder that I have seen posted on other survival forums and not on this one.I definatly did not post it because I was looking to start a pissing match over how to sharpen a pencil as far as that goes Lowes, Home DePot, and Sears all sell these sharpeners and they are selling thousands of them so sombody must like to sharpen there carpenter pencil's with them What ever float's your boat. i must admit, i clicked the link befor i read, and thought wtf?, thats what a knife is for. then i read your post i tottally agree. thanks for the tip.

MIKE, I understood your point but so often I see misuse and misunderstanding of terms .Those types of sharpeners have been around for years , I have an old one here. I wonder how many people know what a carpenter's pencil is ??

It's obviously for drawing pictures of carpenters.... sheesh....

Why is a torpedo level tapered?

Do you know that you can now buy a metric Crescent wrench?

I bet you could modify it or get a large round one and make kindling pretty easily, I thought that was what the op had in mind.

I have a small metal pencil sharpener that has 2 holes , one for normal size pencils and another for the bigger round pencils. I tried it with a dead stick ,and it seems to make great in between tinder , IE. something to put on top of the cotton ball to get the small sticks going. Great to have extra tinder options
I bet fatwood would work great once or twice before having to clean the blade ;)

Hey Mete
I understand what your saying and I pretty much agree my post wasn't so much about pushing carpenter pencil sharpeners any large pencil sharpener would work I APOLIGIZE for my cranky reply (old fart moment) as you know we get alot of snow in this area western N.Y. ANY way to get dry tinder from a branch with that much snow and the inability to get at grasses, cat tails or other such types of tinder would make this type of tool a valueable addition to a survival kit with some of these sharpeners the blade is removable and could be used as a small knife type cutting tool.another plus. again I apologize for my snippy post all I can think of to say is I must have been more stressed then I thought apon finding out that man vs wild was faked. I mean whats next are we gonna wake up some morning and find out Santa Claus is not real no Easter bunny say it aint so :D :D
