Further to the MSR Reactor stove review, I took my dinner on the road tonight.

Prior to leaving I pre-prepped green onions, garlic, serrano pepper and parsely, to add to my ISHI Ramen noodles. (veggies prepped with an Estwing hatchet)

Loaded up the truck survival kit (1430 Pelican case), added the MSR Reactor stove, a pack of ISHI Ramen, some pre-prepped veggies in a zip loc, a couple Indian Chai tea bags and off i went. It was dry when i left, but the weather got worse and worse as i drove on.

Pics are somewhat poor as it was pitch black out and pissing rain.

Got about 70km's outside the city and turned down the Britannia Creek Forest Service road:

drove up the service road, thru 6" - 12" deep puddles until i reached one of the small streams that crosses the road. The small normally fordable stream was now about 4+ feet deep and moving boulders down it.

Turned back, hit the HWY again and continued on to Brackendale, Squamish. Crossing the one lane Bailey Bridge:

the weather was godawful, then it suddenly stopped. The clouds parted for several minutes and i was lucky enough to catch this picture of the moon reflecting back into the clouds:

Figured this was a good time and place to stop for dinner, 10 clicks down a rural road, in the dark, beside a swift flowing rain swollen river. Complete and utter darkness, perfect time for Sasquatch to be out roaming.
Getting dinner ready:

initial light up of the MSR REACTOR:

hot & ready!:

cooking:

MRE, so to speak....Thai ramen noodles with fresh gren onions, serrano peps, garlic and parsely, with a teaspoon of hot curry thrown in:

while i was cooking (all of 2 minutes....) i took this pic of the steam from the cookpot mingling with the rain torrential rain that reappeared:

Finished up dinner and made some indian Chai tea

finished cleaning up, still did'nt see Sasquatch, so i got back into the jalopy and headed for home. On the HWY a passing car kicked back a rock the size of a golf ball and it took out my left headlight. Smashed it. Its pissing rain, pitch black and i'm going by one headlight....oh fun......flicked on the PIAA 8" fog lamps and rumbled along the twisty road. about an hour later i got back home.

Fun little outing, its always good to take the truck for a good long drive, let the engine get good and hot for a while. I would have taken more pics of the area, but the weathe rturned nastier and it was just so dark. Got lots of pics but they just did'nt turn out. next time i'm bringing a genny and my floodlights.......

Nice pics. Thanks for posting.

Its amazing how good food tastes when cooked and eaten in the outdoors.

Sweet..that dinner looks like it could hurt at the other end!

Great pics! That MSR stove looks like it really does an efficient job.

I have this sudden craving for Thai food and curry ...

All the best,

- Mike

Good review - Bushman. Those look like some pretty lonely rounds out there.

Bushman - I noticed that MEC does not ship the butane canisters. Are the MSR canisters proprietary to the stove or will the stove fit a standard butane canister? Thanks..

Great little story bro, sorry to hear about the headlight though !!!

Squamish is a great place to visit eh, lots of hiking to be done in and around that area !!!!

yup standard isobutane canisters, idont know the thread pitch off hand though...

PITDOG! yea I love that area, although not as much nowadays since the yuppies took over the area and bulldozed entire forests to build their yuppie condos. I've spent a great deal of time up those logging roads. There is some greta old roads that no longer in use, some incredible camping sites if you like solitude. Lots of grouse too, and they are tasty.

I might head up again this afternoon, and try to get some DAYLIGHT pics of the rivers. last nights picturs (over 200) only a few turned out...

In that picture of Bailey Bridge, what is that in the foreground on the left side of the lane? I can't quite make out what it is.

Thats one thing that happens out west here, and never happend back est. Kicked up rocks, Ive replace two windsheild, multiple craks in the glass and two head lights OH MY GOD! :D

The Squamish area is awesome. We've made a few trips to Whistler over the years and I always take an off day from skiing to hike up the Chief.

Bushman,
My grandmother owned a place on the ocean at Britannia Beach. I can remember visiting
her quite a few times. The most pleasant and unpleasant memories were her chihuahua
licking my ears and her budgie bird biting my thumb.
I also remember a few vacation trips driving that very same road (one time on a
night much like yours) when we went to visit my Aunt and Uncle who lived in Squamish.

Your post brings back lots of good memories. Thanks man!!

Bushman is that an Estwing 14A I see in the first pic? That is the neatest little back pocket hatchet I've found so far.

its the Estwing Sportsman hatchet (leather handle) , i'm not sure of the numerical designation tho....

it really needs to see more forest time. I plan to carry it for every woods walk i go on from now on...i'm tired of beating the snot out of my knives when digging out fatwood......

they are incredible hatchets, nukeproof construction.

D-FILGATE - you would'nt recognize the hwy now....the gubmint completely butchered the road and the wilderness aorund the hwy in making it a 4 lane hwy for the rich and elite to speed on so they can speed their SUV's, BW's and Porsches to Whistler/Balckcomb faster.

I love that area as well. When i first left Saskatchewan on my hitchhiking tour that ended up lasting 11 years the first place I went was whistler. It was incredibly beautiful and the people were super. I had a hell of a time walking after a couple drinks though because everything is sloped and steep ones at that. I must have rolled down half the hills in the area.

Hey Bushman5, the more I read your posts, the more I realize you're one crazy guy! Too bad I don't live closer. :( Then we could get together and go pick up pitdog and really get him in trouble. :D
