Now that I am mostly over the severe flu and bronchitis I had over NY and the weather has broke a little bit I'm trying to get back into hiking to get in shape for the summer.

However the days are short so I have to do it at night.

I hike up this super steep old woods road to the pasture on top. I think this is dogbane?

And I think this is one of my dogs;)

I used to be able to bend over and get under this fallen tree. It fell and landed in between a double sapling. But now it's sunk down so yay! I have to chop a few branches out of the crown so I can thru

Look how much resin is in this branch still.

More chopping. This was some mega hard chestnut oak. The little 15" 15oz chopped it fine although it took more effort on my part than my 17" 23oz Ganga Ram

Here's the other end. It was stuck in another tree too so I left it hangin'

Finally a little knife pron

Well there's a little knife hike pictorial for ya

Great pics, I can't wait for Spring to come to my neck of the woods... You have some great blades there, one of these days I will buy an HI. For typical camp/property use, which model of HI would be a good choice as a first purchase?

Cool pics, amigo. I used to do a lot of night hiking, makes for a fun time. The best was when you were lucky enough to have a decent hunter's moon, it was almost like daylight. Course, sucks to run out of batteries when it's pitch black!

That skull is really cool.

But please, don't chop off your hand. LOL.

Thanks for the Pics HD.

Couple of Questions if you don't mind

What is that chopper - and is it full tang?

What is your all around favorite all around chopper for the woods concerning ergos/efficiency/durability/ ease of carry?

Thanks,

sp

It'a a 15" 15oz HI Chitlangi. it's full tang, extends the length of the handle and is peened at the butt cap, but it isn't full tang like a knife with 2 handle slabs.

My favorite khuk is the no longer available Bonecutter but my favorite available one is the 17" 23 or so oz Ganga Ram.

A bigger heavier khuk will chop better but is harder to carry and won't machete as well.

I like 17" and 23 to 25 oz. for trail clearing.

I normally don't carry a khuk backpacking because I mostly have need of chopping not macheting although I might give this light one a shot

Kydex sheaths will save you a few ounces but I really like the traditional sheath, especially after it gets loose cause it sets off from your body and it's easy to get in and out:thumbup:

In the summer when I camp, I like to take a good light & look for crawdads, they are very easy to find at night along the edge of the creek.

nice pics.

the woods are a bit different at night...its a nice difference as long as you aren't jumping at every shadow like i did when i was a kid...
