Night Out

Had a nice simple night out with a friend from school. We went down to the bank of the Farmington River a little less than two miles from my house and about 3/4 of a mile from his house. We stopped and watched the highschool softball game on the way over.

We got down to the river and Dave immediatly broke out his fishing pole and started working on dinner. I started gathering firewood.

He caught a barely legal rainbow trout and I cleaned it out (thanks Tony! ;) ) and he went back to work fishing.

After a while of no luck, we started the fire and cooked up a couple of hotdogs while we waited for a good bed of coals to form.

Once the coals were well established, we tossed the fish right onto them and cooked it for a while until the meat flaked off the bone...then we ate it. Delicious!!

Somewhere in there we set up camp. I slept in my typical setup; poncho for overhead cover, ground cloth, sleeping pad and 30 degree (F) bag. Dave used a hammock with a clear plastic sheet for overhead cover, and a 40 degree bag.

In the photo you can see a silver bag next to my water bottle...That's my water bag. It holds about 4 liters of water and was free! I got it out of a Dunkin' Donuts Box O' Joe. Works great, I've used it on a dayhike and last night so far, and it has held up great.

I slept great all night, even though the hood of my sleeping bag got soaked from dew (I was sticking out from under my poncho). Dave's feet were cold, and the constant wind kept him from really getting comfy in the hammock.

We went to bed early, I think I was asleep before 9:15. We got up around sunrise and had a breakfast fire to warm up, then broke camp and headed home.

I'm gonna go shower and get ready for a dayhike with some other friends today...the weather is supposed to be awesome.:thumbup:

Oops sorry...I was carrying my GEC Pioneer Trapper with jigged bone scales. I was also carrying a little bushcrafty knife I made, but I never used it. The GEC did everything I needed (mostly just cleaning the fish and cutting skewers for the dogs) and kept its edge nicely...not that I really tested its edge retention with the tasks I was performing.

Someone needs to talk to Simon. When I was his age a 'night out with a friend from school' did not look a thing like this. ;)

The recycled water bag is cool. I made one out of the boxed wine liners.--Reduce,Re-use,Recycle---KV

That's what it's all about, looks like a great time. Your recycled coffee/water bag is an excellent idea. Even if it doesn't last too long, you can always get another one.

That wind was BITING cold yesterday and last night! Way to tough it out!

This weekend should be AWESOME! FINALLY!

A great way to bid farewell to that biblically proportioned rainy spell we had!

Looks like you had a great time  Always nice to get out and about when the weather permits.

Bob, very well may be. It had a bit of a shimmer to it, so I assumed it was rainbow...

A note about the water bag: The water that comes out of it tastes like watered down instant coffee...even after several thorough rinsings and a soaking in bleach...but it's clean and hydrating! Just tastes like a bag of ass...

Simon, thats cause D&D is recycling too...ass bags. They considered calling the box of joe, the " recycled ass bag of Joe.." but the ad-guys put the kabash on that one...;)

Good to see you getting out..my time here is winding down as well. I dont really feel like being on the internet much. Honestly, if it wasnt for all you guys and the knives...I wouldnt get on the interweb at all.

sorry guy's it's a brook trout. we have them all here in mt and we catch them all.
i could explain how to tell the difference but it would be easier for you to ixquick it. and learn for yourself. (ixquick is a search engine that dosen't save your isp address-privacy!) or if you don't care about privacy just google it.
i like the poncho set up!!!

Just tastes like a bag of ass...
