Nighthawk ats-34

How about BG42 instead? At any rate, I agree that this knife deserves a steel upgrade. I'm hoping that eventually, Buck will offer this model with a steel variation, maybe in Pete's? hint hint:cool:

It looks like BG-42 would cost a fair bit more than ats-34. I bet ats-34 as a regular offering would sell fairly well.

Why would one want to change the steel on a military utlity knife? The design objective on this
type of knife is durablity and ease of use along with field maintainablity (ease of sharpening).
Neither ATS-34 or Bg 42 lend themselves to this agenda. Cost is another factor for mass
produced utility knives. Buck's choice of steel's is ,in this case, ideal for the design intent.

Well, I want a ats-34 Nighthawk so they better start making them. Soon. Or else.
I have a regular Nighthawk, and now I want an ats-34 one. Yes, ats-34 will cost more, but not that much more. And ats-34 durability and sharpening would be no problem. Forget about BG-42, it costs too much. Just do ats-34. Soon. :)

Please DON'T get ME started on an ATS-34 Nighthawk! I have 2 of the "regular" ones, but I REALLY wouldn't "mind" having one made of ATS-34!.:).

Think BG42 with a nice satin finish. The heck with the military design or proposed application for this model. This is a great design and I want one out of BG42, dangit!

Well gentlemen, I do believe, Joe may confirm this, that originally the Nighthawk prototypes were made of 154CM, (without the cool sticky handles). That to my limited knowledge, is almost identical to ATS34???
So, Mr. Buck, it can be done... hint...hint....????:D

Also, the current Nighthawk sheath is just fine. Kydex would add a significant cost to the knife and not everybody needs it. So the new ats-34 Nighthawk should come with the current, well-designed, well-made, well-priced sheath to keep the cost down and the whole package more affordable. Maybe Buck could offer a choice between the regular sheath and more expensive Kydex, much as Kabar does with some of their larger knives. But if not, then the regular sheath is fine, and it makes the whole thing more affordable, an important consideration.

Fella's,Pleeeease! All the talk of another Nighthawks is getting to me!!!!!!!!! I tried to talk myself out of
wanting a new one earlier, but..........It'd be Vg-10 for me. Don't care much for ATS-34. No luck with it.
Now if A.G. Russell's still have some of the Mini-Nighthawks.........that might scratch this itch.

Well, what does Buck have to say about this? I don't think an ats-34 Nighthawk is at all a far-fetched idea. So how about it, Joe? What are the chances?

Hey Marty....

Kydex for a Nighthawk ???

How about Concealex ??

I have Concealex sheaths available for the Nighthawk...

Makes a good improvement for a Great blade....

Drop me a note if you are interested..

Hmmmm...
Lemme go check. My puny little brain says it should not be especially hard to do, although they would have to be combined with the current handle. I am probably just opening a can of worms with this but it is worth a try!

Joe: The current handle is great, and using it would keep the cost down. I'm not looking for some sort of limited edition knife, like the Master Series with it's rather expensive BG-42 and the special handle. Nor a Kydex sheath, the current sheath being just fine. I'm talking about the same package as the current Nighthawk with the substitution of ats-34 for the regular steel. Keep the handle and the sheath the same. That will keep the price hike as low as possible and make the ats-34 Nighthawk more affordable and more of a mass market item, a working knife, instead of a pricey, limited appeal specialty product. Forget about BG-42, fancy handles, fancy sheaths. Those things are of secondary importance and raise the price. The main thing is the ats-34 and a reasonable price. If people want BG-42, fancy handles, or Kydex sheaths, they can grow them themselves!

What is the minimum number of blades that must be cut at one time to make the project feasible?

…I'm looking into my crystal ball and I see a Nighthawk with "Blade Forums" inscribed on the blade followed by "ATS-34.":D

Okay, even if it doesn't say "Blade Forums," it still says "ATS-34."

Allow me to ring in here....

Jeff O,

To get a project like this one started, it's not so much an issue of a minimum run in our production but a total forecast for the unit. Generally if a new model pencils out, then we like to see a forecast starting at around 10,000 pcs.

On the other hand, we do special projects with a lot smaller quantities than that. If Cabella's or Smokey Mountain think they can sell them, then we might make as few as 250 pcs just for them.

Maybe the thing to do is a letter-writing campaign to some of our biggest sellers. Cabellas in particular likes a one-of-a-kind type of knife.

BG-42 is great and costs, VG-10 would be a superb choice and ATS-34/154CM would be OK. Would I really be middying the waters if I suggested a carbon steel version of this knife?

I personally love the current handle, it has great feel!
The only "drawback" to the knife is/was the steel. Buck would (I suspect) do well to go back to the "original" blade; I think it would sell well (at least to me ), something Joe already knows:D...
Make it so, Joe...
Turn up the heat, Pete...
